My husband is 64.

He his having problems when beginning to eat a meal, not always but sometimes.

He starts to cough and splutter. Once he gets into the meal he is alright.

He is well other than this and wants the food.

He went to the dentist recently so don't think there is anything amiss in the throat.

Any ideas?

Hello orangeblossom

Just a suggestion:
This could be a psychological stress response. It may be that as soon as the food hits your hubby’s mouth he starts a stress response designed to reject the food. The reason why he has started doing this may be an old childhood memory relating to food that has resurfaced or it could be an incorrect Nervous System response etc etc etc.

I know we talk about it a lot on HP but EFT may really benefit your Hubby
re-gain control over this. As well, the mandatory advice to talk to his GP.

Possibiity

The husband of an acquaintance of mine has those sorts of symptoms and has had all types of testing done.

They finally said that they thought he had a condition called "Barrett's Esophagus" but when you have that, you cough because you feel like you are choking. If your husband is "just" coughing, it might be a food allergy. One of the most common allergies is wheat but I wouldn't expect it to react as soon as he starts eating, unless the body has developed some sort of acute sensitivity.

I tend to think it might be more of a esophagheal situation. Might ask for tests to rule out GERD, Acid Reflux complications and Barrett's Exophagus.

Thank you both for your replies.

I think you are right about a stress response. Funnily enough we have had someone staying with us for last few days and it hasn't occured at all, we also went out for a meal with family at the weekend and again no problem.

He does seem to have a bit of a problem with swallowing the vitamins we have daily so maybe that sort of triggers it off.
