Well talk of the devil, only yesterday in the news ...

I wonder how some experts can be so wrong about what is good for you and what is not, unless it is deliberate ..

Have you read 'The Diet delusion', by Gary Taubes? (It was published several years ago.) If Taubes is to be believed - and I see no reason not to believe him - the US and later the UK governments were under pressure to give dietery guidelines and the research at the time was inconclusive as to whether carbs (specifically, refined sugar and refined starchy carbs) were to blame for heart disease - and increasingly, for obesity - or fats were. So the politicians listened to the researchers who had the loudest voices. Once they had invested in blaming fats, they didn't want to say they had backed the wrong horse, so kept blaming fat for high cholesterol and high cholesterol for heart disease (modifying it to become saturated fats rather than all fats) - ignoring the mounting evidence that they were wrong and ignoring the mounting evidence to link low cholesterol levels with cancer.
This came up last year in a discussion about coconut oil.

Here are a couple of links:
Recent studies have found no significant association between saturated fat intake and cardiovascular risk, writes Dr Malhotra. Instead, saturated fat has been found to be protective of the heart. (<a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href=" http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/10October/Pages/Saturated-fat-link-with-heart-disease-questioned.aspx "> http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/10October/Pages/Saturated-fat-link-with-heart-disease-questioned.aspx )
(The study) pooled together data from 21 unique studies that included almost 350,000 people, about 11,000 of whom developed cardiovascular disease (CVD), tracked for an average of 14 years, and concluded that there is no relationship between the intake of saturated fat and the incidence of heart disease or stroke.

Once the government has issued guidelines and the health professionals have climbed on the band wagon, it's very hard for people to look at what they 'know' to be true.
