Hi All ..

Seems to be nearly the same case every time you try and research something . One so called expert says one thing and another so called expert says the opposite .

I have been more drawn to plant proteins rather than animal proteins of late and have never really entertained soya in my diet a part from soya lecithin capsules a long time ago .

Some sources say that Soya is the best thing since sliced bread and another mentions about links with breast cancer and such likes .

Anyone been on soya for any reasonable length of time that could perhaps share how they feel on it? Or does anyone have any info / opinions on soya .

cheers

Thanks for adding amy ..

Here is another http://authoritynutrition.com/is-soy-bad-for-you-or-good/

a snippet of text from the link,

In one study, 48 women were split into two groups. One group ate their normal diet, the other supplemented with 60 grams of soy protein.

After only 14 days, the soy protein group had significant increases in proliferation (increase in number) of the epithelial cells in the breasts, which are the cells that are most likely to turn cancerous

In another study, 7 of 24 women (29.2%) had an increased number of breast epithelial cells when they supplemented with soy protein

These changes may indicate an increased risk of breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in women. However, many observational studies show that women who consume soy actually have a reduced risk of breast cancer

talk about covering all bases 🙂

A slightly better review of soya

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/ingredient-focus-soya

and yet phytosterols that are of soya http://www.livestrong.com/article/26224-benefits-phytosterols/ in this article explain how they kill cancer cells ..

It seems whatever benefit is highlighted some other report highlights the same thing as being harmful .

Still I suppose experts can't really decide if coffee or butter is good for you or not lols . 🙂

I think what you read may depend on the bias, i.e. the agenda behind it. Soy is a HUGE industry and the fact that it has been linked to breast cancer (now long established) should not be overlooked.

Another interesting account .

http://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/soy3.html

extract of info from site,

For years I have tolerated growing onslaught of misinformation about Soy even though most studies relating to soy is quite positive. Today, I am angry and decided to post this myself.

If you don't believe me that soy is good for you, you don't have to! You can prove this for yourself! I will tell you how! The secret is here.

Do this: go to www.pubmed.org and do a search using the following keyword as follows:

  • soy cancer
  • soy dht
  • soy testosterone
  • soy estrogen
  • soy osteoporosis

You will then learn the truth and you don't even have to believe me. I have done this for you already, and here are the summaries in case you don't have time! True information that I will post the research citations verbatim directly from research studies as follows:

1. DHT hormones (dihydrotestosterone) are the major cause of male hormone baldness. When lack of testosterone does not generate that much DHT stays on your head. The only known substance to reduce that is DHT.

2. Phytoestrogen has no effect on estrogen levels or hormone levels or even testosterone.

3. Soy helps with osteoporosis.

4. Soy reduces cancer and is used to treat cancer victims.

I will post the medical abstracts verbatim below.

Now the reason why such a relentless attack on soy is that there are ulterior motives from certain interest groups such as

1. Decreasing milk cows sales.
2. the use of genetically modified cows
3. the use of bovine growth hormones injected into cows which we drink and may cause obesity
4. The prevalence of mad cow's disease
5. The findings of a chemical toxins and toxic vaccines and might be found in cow's milk.

I am an Asian, here where I live we actually consume more soy milk then even fermented soy products. And it has kept us relatively low of osteoporosis.

Because of so much bombardment against soy, I will not put any thing here besides research abstract below. Ted"

Nope: soy does not effect testosterone:
Serum prostate-specific antigen but not testosterone levels decrease in a randomized soy intervention among men.

Soy is used in cancer treatment!! Cancer causing? You have been lied to by the Cow's milk consortium! Yes it protects against Prostate Cancer!

Yes I realise it is confusing but, as I say, try to check out where the source of info is coming from if possible, e.g. vested interests? paid promotion? government backed?

I've used soya milk and bean curd for years (about 40 years now). As you have found, many in Asia, particularly those of Chinese or Japanese upbringing, use soya products extensively.

I always buy organic soya products, since much soya is GMO.

As for the evidence, all the references above are to articles written about studies - that is, someone's interpretation of the results, rather than the original paper. This means the writers' biases are directing the tone of the article. For every article against there is another in favour. I really don't know what the answer to this is. It is common everywhere, but pervades the food industries.

I agree amy .

It's a shame that what is written can be false depending solely on their agendas .

Another suggestion is that those that are allergic to soya will obviously have adverse reactions thus will reflect in there view / experience of eating soya .

Yes it seems that there is perhaps very little fact and an abundance of theory based upon their own agenda like amy was saying .

I like how many theories start off with, Soya MAYBE harmful or it MIGHT be beneficial . It just dumbfounds me to read extreme opposites all the time from supposed experts in their field .

Perhaps if it's good enough for asians then it's good enough for me 🙂

You'll find the extreme opposites in anything you research unfortunately.

Crowan touched on an important point, much Soya in the world is produced in the U.S. and is a GM crop, so it's important to make sure you find organic soya. I've also heard (feel free to try and verify yourself) that as Soya is "the new big thing" in the food industry, many of the poorer countries are farming it by destroying rainforest etc. faster than they did for cattle in the past.

So many things to consider. And yes I do eat soya as well as tofu, as well as... yes... meat. * shock horror * 😀

Yes I agree that GM soya is a no no . I have just purchased some soya protein powder from holland and barrett as yet to arrive and wondered about there soya's source . (not soy sauce) 🙂

Here is a handy list

I am also opposed to GM foods. (I was involved in spearheading an umbrella anti GM group, in the last century, called Genewatch). Unfortunately buying non GM soy is no guarantee that it is not GM if it comes from US. This is because US has a voluntary policy towards labelling GM foods! It is a disgraceful/underhanded way of operating. I wish knowledge of this was more widespread.

Holland and Barrett are owned by the Carlyle group - reason enough for me not to use them.

We all - as was observed in another thread recently - have biases. The scientific process is designed to overcome this problem. Unfortunately, media and governments don't always wait for peer reviewed work of for long studies to be done ( look how many magazines parrot "saturated fat" and "cholesterol") before they announce what's' good for us'. Or 'bad for us'.

Provamel source ethically (and not from the USA) from small farmers. There are some decent firms out there if you look.

Well talk of the devil, only yesterday in the news ...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2946617/Butter-ISN-T-bad-Major-study-says-80s-advice-dairy-fats-flawed.html

I wonder how some experts can be so wrong about what is good for you and what is not, unless it is deliberate ..

When butter started to get a bad press, margarine was seen as an alternative to butter. I was never swayed .... mostly because of the inferior flavour but also because it is a processed product.
