I have seen this new probiotic which the French are claiming is brilliant.
What are the views from the experts on the ingredients which I would appreciate as they say it's the "new" thing in probiotics with prebiotic, probiotic and post-biotics.
2mg Vit C
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Lcr35 (supposed to be the magic ingredient) 1 billion cfu
Other ingredients
Fructo oligosaccharides, potato starch, L,. Rhamnosus culture medium, hypromellose (veg capsule) lactose, maltodextrin, mag stearate and caramel colouring.
Contains milk
I'm unsure about the maltodextrin and also that it contains lactose and milk.
Would appreciate comments regarding this product - is it as good as they are making out. They are stating that the LCR35 is a magnificent ingredient and is the secret behind it's success.
Thank you

Found your product Janet. It only has 1 billion units, and for any serious probiotic there are usually 10-30 billion. There is adverse comment about mixtures of probiotic cultures that I feel are doubtful - there are probably some 1500 different bacteria in the average gut, so the addition of a mixture is not going to be a problem and using just a small number of one kind, if there is a lack of beneficial bacteria, is hardly going to make much difference. The likelihood of improvement is going to be slow.
Maltodextrins are artificial sugars made from wheat or maize flour. Lactose is another sugar from milk. I would suggest that these along with the potato starch and magnesium stearate are fillers in the capsule. Fructooligosacharides (FOS) are to feed the bacteria.
The test mentioned by Jabba is for topical use in the vagina to repopulate the vagina after antibiotic treatment and most of the discussions seem to be referring to this use. So I cannot comment on its use in the gut. I would suggest there are other probiotics that would work as well or better. But I may be wrong.
This study shows immune modulation is dependent on high doses of this probiotic.
Thanks for both the replies - I wanted to get views on this because I wasn't sure about the maltodextrin in it - I have a problem with both sugar and wheat so to have it in a probiotic (even though I tend to open and sprinkle them on food if in capsule form) probably won't do me any good.
There was another one I was interested in that has cranberry powder in and Vit A because I have been having problems of late with my bladder - this may be a better option for me although again why Vit A in a probiotic? Think the bladder problem could be a bit stress related due to a lot of personal problems at the moment which is putting me under tremendous amounts.
Best one so far I've found is the famous Dr. U!
So - all in all - is this probiotic just a lot of hype or does the magic ingredient make the difference?

The probiotic itself is probably very good with many benefits. It is that this formula has only a small quantity of it when tests show it needs to be high-dose.
Also if one is short of beneficial bacteria, unless it has been carefully tested (not cheap) it is more than likely you need both Acidophilus strains and Bifidobacteria strains that inhabit different parts of the gut.
Dr U? Is that Udo Erasmus?
Yes it is find his multi strains good. I am a bit concerned about maltodextrin as I avoid wheat and sugar - would it be harmful in probiotic form?
