Hello, I have not been around for a while due to ill health. I had peritonitis of the bowel some years ago and on and off bouts of serious pain etc., For the last 7 weeks I have had pain but it seems higher than normal, I had a CT scan last week and due to have a colonoscopy this Thursday. I just wondered if anyone can REALLY be honest about what this feels like (I am not bothered about the embarrasment side of things) just the pain!! When they say they sedate you, how good is this to numbing things out etc., also what kind of timescale from start to finish? I have had barium whatsists in the past which was pretty uncomfortable after a while, just as though I was going to have to go to the toilet there, on the spot 😮

Not looking forward to this. I also have to go to eye hospital on Tuesday as I have glaucoma. Please wish me luck that my pressure is down and I don't have to have any more operations in this respect either. Cheers, Jeannie

Hiya Jeannie, sorry to hear you have been poorly. I had a colonoscopy a few years back & they are not pleasant:(,although, I didnt have the sedation so they couldnt do a full test because of this. I didnt have sedation because the doctor doing it was extremely late, and my test was delayed by 5 hours,if I had of had sedation I would of had to wait another 2 hours whilst sedation wore off. I cant really describe the sensation of it,but I could feel the scope in my bowel, I suppose its like a crampy pain and it was uncomfortable & made me cry... BUT you are having sedation,so you may not feel much of this hopefully. The test lasted around half hourish, but yours may be longer cos you are being sedated. The staff were fab where I had mine done. Hope I've not scared you,but you said to be honest. I hope having this isn't too traumatic for you, I am sure they will sedate you adequately, although this may depend on if you have other existing medical problems. I hope things go well for you, well as well as they can be for what you having done!! Not nice, I also felt as if I wanted to 'trump':),but to be honest I was past caring at that point, dignity goes right out the window in such circumstances!! Anyway, hope this has give you an idea of it,sorry,I know its not a nice thing to have done, but obviously neccessary. So good luck & take care, will be thinking of you xxx

I had one last year. I was offered sedation but refused, which was good because I cold watch it on the tv screen. It took about 15-20 mins, but the length of time depends on what they find and if they take any samples.

There was no pain, and it just felt like I was a bloated.

They only negative, if any, was the wait. But I guess that depends on the clinic.

Myarka.

I had one some time back and had sedation. I was aware throughout the treatment and could watch the screen and found it very interesting. The sedation wasn't that strong, but I can honestly say that I felt absolutely no discomfort whatsoever. Try not to worry about it.

Hi jeannie, You have had a bad time of late, sorry to hear that. I have not had a colonoscopy however a good friend of mine has and she also had the sedative. She said that there was no pain although she could feel movement in her bowel, but she felt totally relaxed during the whole procedure. I am sure you will be ok. I hope everything goes ok, please lets us know how you got on.

Thankyou

Thank you all for taking the time to answer me. I do appreciate it. My appointment is today at 2.30 I have been on stict fluids and a concoction of laxitives since 12 yesterday. What a night 😮

I feel so very down, I have had too much pain and discomfort for too many years and hoped it was all settling down. Also with having the added concerns and operations on my eyes, I am feeling vulnerable and weak. I just don't know what I would do without my husband. As for friends (huh) well least said the better eh.

Oh to be fit and healthy
Thank you again.
