I have been contacted by a possible client enquiring about alternative therapies. Client has cancer and is due to start chemo in a few days time. As a professional therapist, would you send a letter to their oncologist enquiring whether permission is given for them to have treatment?....any advice appreciated. i am a member of the FHT and i am sure I read somewhere you had to obtain permission....I am away at the momennt and have limited internet access time to look things up....advice please.
Which treatments have you offered your clients who are undergoing chemo? thanks
If the FHT guidelines recommend you contact their oncologist, then you had better do that. However, I generally ask the client to get the go-ahead from their oncologist or cancer treatment team - you could wait a long time for, or perhaps never receive a reply from a letter you might send.
What therapy has the client asked for? Anything that might aid relaxation is always welcome. What do you feel most confident in offering?
I had cancer treatment a while ago, and really appreciated reflexology - done very gently - in fact it was more a relaxation session, as the therapists didn't try and 'treat' anything in particular. When I was going through radiotherapy I declined any touch therapies - I would have bitten anyone who touched me at that point! I opted to wait until the treatment stopped before I went for more therapies.

My first thought was you have to be sure the patient understands they are COMPLEMENTARY not alternative.
I have given reiki to one or two people who were having chemotherapy - but that was through the hospice where the issue of who knows what is easier to deal with because all my notes go on to themain system used by the doctors. And the use of reiki is approvaed by the hopsice doctors.
Cancer patient have to try Homeopathy treatment. It is simple and uses inherited, biochemical and character indicators.
