Hello John,
1/ Im afraid there are too many variables for anyone to give you an accurate idea of what you have done
2/ your injury is likley to cause some short term changes, but doubtful if it will be life changing, however refer to point 1
3/ pain is there to stop you doing anything that will injure yourself further, it is adaptive and therefore you should refrain from anything that causes pain.
4/ until you have recovered enough to carry out daily tasks with no pain or compensation movement patterns.
Im ex army team 2nd row or sometimes No8, had loads of injuries which I have beaten and come back playing at decent level, so with proper assessment and treatment you should be fine but again refer to point 1
a Sports Therapist will understand your sport and be equipped to administer vaious treatments and administer a rehab plan, if you let me know where you are based I might be able to reommend someone

Listen to your body
Hi, first I'd say try not to panic, from what you've said the pain has started to improve and as its nearly two weeks is probably even better. For a new injury like yours the best compress to use is cold not heat, also ibuprofen to help with the pain but mainly inflammation, it's important to keep using it for at least a week after it stops hurting. The most important thing to do is listen to your body, if it hurts in your back it because it doesn't want to do something. I'm sure you've got a short term injury but pain in your lower back is not something you should work through or ignore, I did and am writing this whilst laid on my bed recovering after having surgery on my lower back to remove part of two discs that had herniated. I hope you feel better soon let us know x
