Hi Wind Whisperer,

Several years ago I fell down the stairs from top to bottom! It took me an hour to get to the phone as I could barely move with the pain. Eventually, I did manage to get to the phone and called my doctor. Luckily someone gave me a lift there. She said it was my coccyx but there was nothing she could do.

As soon as I got home, I called my kinesiologist, who also happended to be an Osteopath. He said to get there immediately. I'm not quite sure what he did, but he certainly knew what he was doing and I just walked out as though nothing had happened. It has never been a problem since.

I hope this helps 🙂

sorry, only just seen this post.

It's easy to knock the Coccyx out of alignment when you fall on it; I'm afraid the only solution is to get it put back by a chiro/osteo. Treatment can be pretty tender, but not usually as bad as having the problem to start with; and may rarely require internal manipulation, but that'd only be is external has failed, and, of course, with careful explanation, consent and chapeurone (sp?).

Usually a couple of treatments of external manipulation and some ultrasound therapy should see you right.

this is a good web-site with information about people's experience of coccyx pain and what they did about it. The founder went to the extreme length of having his coccyx removed - not something to be taken lightly.

Falling on your coccyx has repurcussions for the whole spine as your "tail" should be an extremely mobile piece of kit, with about 5-7 separate tiny vertebral pieces. That sounds strange, and although most of us don't give it a second thought, the muscles around your tail bone should be able to "wag" it like a creature with a more obvious tail can wag theirs. Up and down - side to side - and round and round! As the spine is like a chain, any restriction of movement anywhere in it affects the rest of it, right up to the neck.
So my first thoughts are ice and arnica - then to use a cushion with a whole removed to sit on so that your coccyx is not under any pressure. Give it a little while for the swelling to subside, and then if you need to see a health practitioner who knows what they are doing to help you.
Hope you feel better soon,
Sharon.

Hi- had to just add- try some hypericum 30c (Homeopathic remedy- not the herbal supplement st john's wort). Available over the counter in most chemists. It is much more highly indicated for this type of injury than arnica. Hom

bruised coccyx

Please help.
I bruised my coccyx whilst snowboarding about 3 weeks and I feel that the pain is getting worse. When I sit for too long is when it is at its worse. Other than taking pain killers is there anything else I can do and does anyone know how long it takes to recover??
