Please can anyone tell me what exercises are best for back strengthening, my physio has given me only one and I feel it's not enough, I can't work at the moment because of a lower back problem and I need to get stronger, Can anyone send me a link or direct me to a thread here that mentions it already, I've done a search but sitting here for too long is a problem so I need to find it quickly 😀
Thanks in advance

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

hi purplegirly,
I know it is frustrating at moment but you must start with low level exercise and progress from there, you will also need to consider things like postural dysfunction, weak abs and reasons you have a weak back .
could you give some more details about what history you have and i'll try to help.
incidently i am sports therapist with special interest in reabilaTIVE EXERCISE.
regards
GAZ

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

HI Gaz
Wheesh, where do I start? 😀

....... I have chronic hyperventilation syndrome which had led to all kinds of upper body muscular problems, also I have poor posture which has exacerbated my neck and shoulder problems, years of carrying bags incorrectly, paper rounds as a teen, sitting at a computer half my life (I'm 38)......... the recent problem with my lower back started about 4 weeks ago, I don't know if it's related to any of the above but it started soon after I started using a lumbar support roll, the doctor thinks this is the reason whereas my physio says it's not possible to overuse the roll, so now I don't know what to think. I sit at a desk for my job but I cannot do this at the moment. I've been doing pilates for almost a year and I'm worrying now that there is something horribly wrong with me, the pain is not as bad this last few days but Ive put it down to that fact I'm not working at the moment, I can sleep better but I usually wake up with discomfort in mylower back, lying on my side causes problems in my shoulders so I prefer to sleep on my back. I'm going back to my GP tomorrow because I really want to beat this thing and get better and I don't know where to turn next 🙁

Thanks for your support 🙂

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

I have a chronic spinal disease which affects both my neck and lower back. According to my Specialist, I should have been in a wheel chair long ago, but my secret is a set of yoga back stretches, developed by Bob (whois a sports physiologist) that I have done on a daily basis of 20 mins for the last 20 years. My back is so supple that I can nearly ;)touch my toes (don't tell my consultant) - not bad for 60 years, even without a back problem. I havediagrams of the stretches that I can send you (or anyone interested) - however, haven't the faintest idea how to email them as they are on paper.:eek:So if anyone isinterested, PM me with your name and address, and I will send you a copy.

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

Hi Purplegirly,

Sorry to hear about your problem. Pain is so debilitating.

I had a sacroiliac joint out of alignment and a prolapsed disc at the same time, as a result of pregnancy.

I have had both my physio and chiropractor suggesting that I practice the basic Pilates breathing exercises, which strengthen the core muscles around the lower back and lower abdominals. I have always found them to work well, although it takes practice and effort.

It is always best to seek qualified advice. Hope you find a solution.

Peppermint 🙂

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

hi again,
I would agree that your lumbar support is a contributory factor, because as you say ,it only started when using it, I disagree with your physio who says you cant overuse your support. Any change in either your exercise routine or functional activities will lead to a period of anatomical adaptation where your body changes to be better prepared to cope with the extra demands you are placing on it.
By changing your posture using this external support you are in effect changing your routine, I would recommend that you build up gradually to using it during your functional daily activities. By all means try to introduce pilates style exercise which will benefit not just postural alignment and strength but breathing aswell. I sometimes get my clients to change their seating position several times a day by simply turning round their chair so that the back support against you chest ensures you sit more upright.
Hope things get better soon,
regards
GAz

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

Special Back exercises are not well known as most specialist only the bad ones which will not help. I had back problems for over 5 years and I was in a hospital one month a the time each year in the spring. When my doctor told me that if I was to come back one more year, they would operate on my back and in my head, I say to myself: " you will never see me again as I will do everything in my power to strengthen my back on my own ". This has been 32 years since and I do not have anymore back problem.

In my researches and my studies, I have found 18 back exercises which help strengthen my back and I have helped a lot a people with their back problems.

Good Luck

Joe

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

Hi Joe
I would be very interested to find out about the exercises, I feel that the ones the physiotherapist has given him aren't doing enough to help myproblem.
Thanks for your reply.

RE: Back Strengthening Exercises?

Hello Purplegirly,

The back exercises that I have are extremely good for the back and only I have studied and implemented these exercises. I was 26 years in the canadian military and they don't even have these.

If interested, go to my profile and view some of them.

Regards

Joe
