Hi All
I have been a member on HP since 2008 when I had my first prolapsed disc confirmed and went on to have a microdiscectomy for a huge prolaplse at L5/S1 (left side). I recovered really well and the sciatica went away, however because the prolapse was so big and I waited 3 months for my surgery, I was left with significant nerve damage all the way down my leg and into my foot. I continued to cope with this pain in the hope that the nberve would recover. 2 years later the nerve damage was still present and, unfortunately, the back paion started to comne back along with sciatica inb the right leg. In December 2010 my disc went again (L5/S1). I was taken to A&E and had an MRI where I was told that the same disc had gone again and I needed emergency surgery as I also had cauda equina. Again the op went well, the sciatica went away and I recovered ok with physio etc however the nerve damage was still the same in the left leg and I have since been told it would probably never recover and they convinced me to start Gabapentin. A few weeks ago I went back for f/up and my recent MRI results didnt sound too encouraging to me but the specialist reckons its all ok....2 weeks after that follow up I started Gabapentin but, my back is deteriorating quickly, I am back to turning over in bed as I did just days post surgery and I am soooo stiff in the morning. Basically I am back to square one and very fed-up !! I want some definitive treatment that will sort this stupid back out once and for all.....Just wanted to share my story to see if anyone else has had a similar scenario??? Thanks for reading this short essay lol....any ideas??

Sending you a very gentle hug, It's sad to hear you are back in pain again.

Personally, I would take things into my own hands and demand copies of my files including the mri cd's and reports so that I could look for myself and see what I thought was going on. Then decide on options.

Sounds like the L5/S1 needs help.

Have they offered any other ops like fusion or replacement?

Have you asked for a scond opinion?

I know it is so hard but after two ops they really should have gotten a better outcome?

Thanks Cascara
I have looked my images and read the recent MRI report which I think is pretty awful. my F/UPs at the hospital are undertaken by a nurse specioalist and I haven't once seen the surgeon who carried out my ops !!! When I go for this f/up on 11th August I am going to ask to see my neurologist again because I believe a fusion may be the answer.....Thanks for replying

Just an update- nerve pain getting worse in left leg with hypersensitivity recurring also new loss of sensation to the last 2 toes on my right side.....surely they cannot tell me that things are not on the decline again??? I am so angry because when I had my last op in December I also consented for a laminectomy but they said they didn't carry out this procedure because it wasn't needed. If they had done a laminectomy at the same time as the discectomy I wonder if I wouldn't have had the trouble I am having now?? Soooo fed up
