Hi, I'm doing some research into acidity levels in the body and balancing the PH. Has anyone used, or knows anyone who has used, apple cider vinegar for arthritis?
regards

RE: apple cider vinegar

I know someone who has had good results from drinking cider vinegar for arthritis in their knees. But it was not until other therapies (chiropracty most notably) were also used that most relief was felt.

RE: apple cider vinegar

I was once recommended to take cider vinegar with honey and hot water to ward off an impending migraine. It worked within about 10 minutes. I was later told by someone who used to work with dropout youngsters with drink/drug problems, that the above mixture is also given to alcoholics to help with the "drying out" process, a natural substitute.

RE: apple cider vinegar

Seeing as the body maintains cell and blood pH to narrow limits I wouldn't have thought it wise to attempt to try to alter it without substantial knowledge of physiology. Enzymes work opimally in very narrow pH ranges and enzymes are what make life itself possible.

But you should'nt worry since I wouldn't think it was even possible with the whole bottle of vineger. I remember my Biology classes pretty well and am studying at present and a major part of homeostasis is the widespread use of carbonate buffer systems specifically designed to prevent movement in blood pH in order than the body's enzymes work optimally. As pH moves to change, the buffer solution releases either acid (H+) or alkaline (OH-) ions to negate the change, keeping it very steady indeed.

Normal diet and metabolism produces a substantial excess of acid ions (H+ ions) anyway (far more than a few spoonfuls of vineger) which are constantly removed in the form of carbonic acid (H2CO3) which breaks down into CO2 (expelled by lungs) and water H2O (expelled by kidneys). Usually only a drastic illness or hyperventilation will alter pH noticably which is pretty dangerous.

If cider vineger has a beneficial effect then it's probably not down to it's acidity.
