I am plagued by osteoarthritis and have pain killers and Glucosamine. I'm coping with the knees and arms, although my left elbow is quite painful and I cannot carry bags or lift things with it. I also have it in the base of my neck/top of spine and the last few weeks it has been so painful I don'tknow what to do. It seems to burn and the pain goes across my shoulder. Any ideas as I'm on so many pills for other things I don't want to take more.

Hi Silver Falcon.
There are lots of ideas on what may help with osteoarthritis on this Forum, of you have a good ol rummage.
I lean toward a more alternative view on the arthritis issue, in that so long as there is still a viable amount of cartilage still in the joint then it has a chance of recovery.
I treated several people with osteoarthritic joints that have now made a full recovery, using a treatmemt approach called NAET. According to Dr Nambudripad that developed the system arthritis of various forms are commonly helped with NAET. NAET practitioners aren't alone in making the association of arthritis & inflammation to allergies & sensitivities, there are many books in the popular press, with cited references that come to the same conclusion.
The difference with NAET is that it's aimed at resolving the issue, rather than a life times avoidance of the offending foods or other substances.
I had spent most of my life avoiding a whole list of foods and took a shed load of supplements just to keep inflammation under control and then NAET sorted it.
If you hover your cursor over the Forums heading in the top banner, then you'll see a Search facility for the Forums. If you type in NAET in the Search field and my user name or Candie as Author, then you'll find many more Posts on the subject.
Andrew.

I'm sorry to hear of your suffering. I've had OA since I was 10, I am now 39. I have run the gammut of things to treat it and it has in fact spread to many parts of my body. All of my major joints are in fact affected by it.
I do agree there are many alternative therapies out there. Some of the more traditional ones include high doses of Vitamin C, at 1200 mg a day it will decrease the pain some and slow down the deterioration. This was in fact proven to be correct by the Arthritis assocation. There are many other natural supplements and foods such as mushrooms that are quite benificial.
Also aquatic therapy is essential. It keeps the joints going and therefor the bloodflow is more effective. Be sure if you do aquatic therapy or just swimming on your own that the pool you are in is very warm. Cold pools will only induce the pain you suffer from.
I have controlled mine by having Reiki done on myself and maintaining it daily. I was a point where I couldn't even walk without a walker.
One last general protocol, at least from a doctors standpoint is to get some good pschological therapy in terms of pain management. It really is essential in learning how to cope and learning such skills as meditation and focusing, which in turn will help you through your most critical moments of pain.
Best of luck

RE: Osteoarthritir
Hi,
I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis just last year, I have suffered from knee and back pains for the last 12 years.
In the recent years I have found a great help from aromatherapy oils.
The blend I use is Roman Chamomile and Black Pepper mixed into carrier oil, in my case grapeseed oil.
You can either order the oils separate and mix yourself, or buy a readymade blend.
It is not very expensive so it is worth a try! Few other people have tried my blend too, with great results.
If you massage the oil gently to affected joints in the evening for example, in the morning a LOT of the pain is just simply gone.
Aany aromatherapy supplier will have the base oils. Or you can visit an aromatherapist who will give you a massage and can also blend the product for you to buy and take home.
Other things that have helped me have been yoga and tai chi as an exercise mode, I belive it is VERY important to keep moving and excercising gently.

I have OA mainly in my knee (have to have a knee replacement) and my fingers. I take painrelief and have tried Glucosamine, Cod Liver Oil etc. However I have found that, as Amaris says, it is essential to keep moving - I do Pilates and find it makes my knee more mobile, stable and less pain. I keep my fingers moving by typing a lot on HP! ;):D
