At the top of the page on the menu hover over "Forums" on the dropped menu from that select "My Profile" on the page that loads looks for "Avatar settings" or something to that nature.

make sure "Use Avatar in posts" is checked. Click the links that says "Click to choose Avatar" browse the gallery folders and when you find the one you like, click it. At the bottom of the profile settings there will be a button to apply the changes.
