I have 2 ongoing battles going on at the moment both since the new year 😡

One is with the company who manufactured our clothes drier, which has an intermittent fault and the other is with a local window firm who need to replace a couple of windows which are faulty and newly installed.

The drier company have only jumped into action since I threatened to go onto washing machine forums and tell my story - I am on first name terms with the Customer service manager now 😀 - he actually sympathises with me but still fobs me off with laying the blame at the insurance backed warranty and engineers.

The window company have failed to show up on several occasions and have ignored several letters despite reassuring me when I have managed to speak to the owner on the phone.

We have several small businesses and I could not imagine delivering such poor service - it is very exasperating. :banghead:

Since the window company is local, I would tell them that unless they turned up and made good their work, I will be exposing them to the local paper (either by negotiating to have an article printed or via the letter page). Commercial companies are always trying to avoid bad publicity - that is your ammunition.

Insurance companies are notoriously bad for coughing up when money is due. Look at the riots in Croydon...there are businesses still waiting to be financially settled from their insurance companies. In fact, it has gone on so long now that the government is intervening I hear (heard on the news recently).

Needless to say I am not alone in this topic, most of the time we have to try and laugh these things off but my goodness they can lead to serious consequences and one hell of a lot of stress.

Hi amy green,

Commercial companies are always trying to avoid bad publicity - that is your ammunition.

Yes I agree that is an option.
Threatening to tell my story on washing machine forums certainly jumped the Customer service manager in that company into action 😉

I nearly did this earlier in the year with the window man and then when I finally spoke to him he told me that he had badly broken his leg and could he have some time to get things back on track. Since then he has failed to turn up on an agreed day so I am waiting to see if I get a reaction from my last letter!

I am very understanding and prepared to compromise, it is the lack of communication which frustrates me. 😡

Hi,

This type of thing is sadly endemic in this country. Tbh - it's a shock when you get good service or come across someone behaving in a reasonable and helpful way. Why ? I'm not sure. I've heard the reasons of being overworked and that may be partly the reason - but still that's not an excuse for shoddy behaviour. I've come across appalling beahviour in the NHS. These people know better but choose to behave in the wrong way. When my mother was in hospital I saw a nurse going down the ward pointing at various patients in bed and telling the ward sister that she hated "that one and that one and that one". That sort of behaviour is not overwork - it's just sheer vileness. We've all had to put up with being let down by both employees and self employed people (plumbers, electricians and yes even some alternative therapists who are so disorganised that they should never be in business) who can't or won't seem to realise that if their service is poor then they won't get any more work. Unfortunately being "good" at something (i.e. plumbing, relexology , physiotherapy etc) isn't good enough in itself to go into business - you have to be business minded and organised - which many self employed people don't realise until sadly it's too late.

As I said I'm not sure why this is endemic here but my belief is that not many people today have any respect for others and this comes out in all sorts of ways. When someone doesn't phone or call when they say they will is an example of this. I've taken days off work (my precious annual leave) for deliveries which haven't arrived. They're treating the client as completely unimportant. In many countries the client comes first so this sort of attitude would be abhorrent to them - plus in many countries people take more pride in themselves and their jobs whereas sadly here many people try to get away with doing as little as possible. Another thing is that many people don't have manners - so letting someone down isn't considered shameful as it is in some countries. My friend had a party for her little girl and the number of parents who didn't bring their kids nor sent a note of apology was quite a few. This sort of behaviour is rampant - no respect or consideration for others. Add into the mix that a). many people working in companies, shops or self employed are seemingly too dull to realise that customers pay their salaries and many won't be back if they receive shoddy service and b) many people have no interest in their job and hey presto you've got a recipe for disaster.

I know it's easier said than done but I "ditch" companies and people who don't behave with any sense of reasonableness. You know them - the people who let you down. I also send emails to companies if I've received good or bad service - after all why shouldn't someone who has been really helpful or who has gone out of their way to help get recognition they deserve and vice versa ? When people start to realise that they lose custom due to their antics - perhaps that's the only way they will "review" their behaviour.
