I hear some differing opinions from therapists on this, so thought i'd ask here to see what most people consider:

Absolute Contraindications to Massage & Reflexology?

Also Pregnancy First Trimester opinions - Massage ok, Reflexology not? Or neither?

contraindications

Contraindications to massage in the first trimester are merely an insurance related problem. The fear is that the cliient will sue the therapist if there are problems with the pregnancy (which is statistically more likely during the first trimester).

There is no evidence that massage can cause problems during pregnancy.

Thanks, I'm aware of this. Just curious as to how many therapists here go ahead and massage anywhere regardless of insurance fears.

My insurance covers me for pregnancy massage, as I did an additional course. But it says nothing about not treating within the first trimester. The policy excudes other things like blood stops and have to have a filtered ear candles with a cover on the head etc, but nothing on pregnancy. Personally I do work within the 1st trimester as pregnancy is a natural event not a medical problem. There is no evidence that giving massage and reflexology leads to miscarriage. Giving bodywork with care and attention supports mums-to-be, not tortures them

The subject of contraindications is a regular debate on Hp. Have a look at them.

Best wishes

I changed insurance from the FHT to Balens as they would only cover pregnancy massage if I got a Dr's or Midwife certificate/letter prior to any kind of bodywork for every pregnant client (which they didn't make clear when I got the insurance with them). I don't think I would be working if that was the case!

I personally don't work in the first trimester for massage or reflexology, purely because that is how I was taught and I like to make sure that everything has settled.

Massage is definitely not recommended if you have a DVT or if you are suspected for a Spinal cord injury.
