We have Buddlia in the garden, which are usually full of Peacock Butterflies this time of year,, and we haven't seen ONE yet. Two red admiral were chasing each other yesterday, then a few cabbage whites about and that's been all.
Then I heard David Attenborough on the radio saying that he has lived in the same home for many years.........and even last year he noticed a drastic drop in numbers of butterflies.
It seems that the hot dry April, may be the reason...........not suitable weather for them.......what a shame
We had loads of butterflies last year, but only a handful this year. We were just commenting the other day about how few there seem to be. I'm sure the numbers will increase again for next year though.

There is a butterfly count ongoing - detail here:

with pdf's for id etc. It takes 15 mins and last year I think I heard 20,000 people took part.

I think the hard winter has a lot to do with it - also we had a very hard frost at the beginning of May after a really warm April which caused a die-off of many plants - and insects?
I heard there was a serious problem with bee populations, but I hadn't heard anything about butterflies. They might be related?
My buddlia flowers aren't very good this year. I haven't seen a single butterfly on them yet. In fact, I've only seen about 4 butterflies altogether. Haven't seen any honey bees either. There do seem to be a fair few bumble bees and a very few wasps.
