I've just heard on the radio that two holiday reps who were earlier acquitted in connection with the deaths of two British children who were overcome by fumes from a faulty gas boiler in Corfu are going to be retried because the father of the children feels that they should have been found guilty.

I wondered what everyone else thinks about this. My own feelings are that, while understandable, the father really wants vengeance (aka justice). He wants someone to suffer because his children died. These two reps have had this hanging over their heads for over three years and I personally don't feel they should be 'punished' or that they are specifically 'to blame'. Sometimes in life bad things happen and my own philosophy leads me to think that we are supposed to learn and grow from them. Sending people to prison for things like this, acts of negligence rather than malice, seems counter productive to me. What good will it do? It certainly won't bring the children back. What do you think?
Sunanda I agree with you. Although I did not read the link my initial reaction was why the holidat reps. I cant imagine how the family of the children feel but I bet the reps were just some scapegoats trying to earn a living and see the world. If anyone should be sued surely it would be the owner of the accommodation. However I feel it is sad that we live in a society that someone can always be sued although if it was my child I would probably feel I had to have some thing righted in order to save others.
Only my opinion but really do not see what sending these reps to prison would achieve other than destroying more lives.

Will it be a criminal or civil lawsuit? Are they gunning for the reps or the company? Like Linda, I think the owner of the property should be help responsible.
I was under the impression that once you have been found innocent, you cannot be retried for the same case. I need to put this past one of my laywer clients!
This is in Greece, Jabba, so who knows how many times they can be tried! From memory, it seemed to me that it was a criminal trial. The father wants 'justice' for the children (ie vengeance I guess). But I always feel like this when cases of 'criminal negligence' come up (the thought is that the reps should have checked the condition of the boiler apparently). My feeling is always that sometimes, regrettably, sh1t happens but punishing human beings is pointless. There's always got to be somebody to blame, I suppose.
Dreadful that these children died. Are the reps to be blamed because they didn't check the boiler? Does that mean they are qualified heating engineers too? I have my boiler checked by a qualified heating engineer. In all honesty I feel the owner of the accommodation is the one responsible.
I just don't see how these two holiday reps were in any way responsible. The father is so blinded by his own grief at losing his children he can't see this at all. When people are in this way I wonder at the 'support' they're getting from friends and family. I suppose people are too scared to tell him that he's probably being unreasonable.
Having said that, I'm making the assumption that the reps knew nothing about the broken boiler before the deaths. I'm not sure they deserve to be punished, though.
I feel so sorry for all concerned...
Whilst I'm sorry that the family have lost their children, it can't possbily be the reps fault that the boiler was broken, unless they had specifically been asked to check it and had said it was ok. Even then, if the hotel/accomodation is the ones that told them it had undergone safety checks, then it is the hotel/accomodation owner that has to take responsibility, not the reps. You can't shoot the messenger.
Some people, unfortunately, feel that they will get rid of their grief by hurting someone else. This isn't the answer and the hurt will not go away if they do manage to do it. I'm sure that the reps have already gone through enough trauma themselves, which they probably aren't supposed to have. Too much blame culture unfortunately.
I hope they find peace soon.
