I tried to post the link several times but it didn't allow me for some reason. Basically a woman has been arrested today for calling passengers on a tram "black" and "not British" What this woman said was appalling, quite sick actually. However, she was arrested for it a couple of hours ago and personally I find this worrying because what ever happened to freedom of speech? Fascism is creeping in and I feel that things will gradually get worse.

What ever happened to 'I don't agree with you but I defend your right to say it' I wonder what else we'll start being arrested for 'saying'.

If I was on the tram I definitely would have told her to shut up! she's making a fool of herself, but even still an arrestable offense it was not. The video is on the Daily Mail website and you tube by searching 'racist lady on tram'.

I'd love to hear what HP members think about this. Please remember the bigger picture about 'freedom of speech' and not the actual racism in the video which is obviously uncalled for and horrid, hope she feels ashamed of herself.

And in other news last week a Judge decreed that yobs can no longer be arrested for swearing at the police, as it's apparently "so commonplace" these days. Presumably they'd be arrested for calling a black policeman "black" though.

Outright racism is obviously wrong and should be taken seriously, as in the tram lady case, but I certainly agree that the days of "The Thought Police" are getting closer all the time.

Yes there is the whole "I don't agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it" but in my personal experience people who hold views like her's have no interest in defending MY right to say things that I believe in. They say OH FREEDOM OF SPEECH but when I want to speak of my views that are different to theirs I get shouted down as some kind of liberal bleeding heart PC leftie etc etc etc. Hmmmmm defending freedom of speech should come from both sides.

I did see the clip and read the transcript, and although I don't find swearing offensive at all, I felt for the poor kid who was sitting on her lap with her effing and blinding who's English was probably worse than those she was railing against. Some of my friends on Facebook genuinely reckon she was strung out on some kind of drug/substance.

Swearing is no longer an arrestable offense, so it was obviously the "you're Black, you're not British" bit she was arrested for. Racism aside it's the fact that we can no longer speak our mind that's worrying. Im white, and if I want to say "most white people are secretly racist" out loud on a tram I shouldn't be arrested for doing so!

Fascism,1984, Though Control, are words that spring to mind!

it is my understanding from work colleagues who belong to certain ethnic minorities that the term "black" is their preferred reference as opposed to "coloured".

I have not seen the context to which you refer so this is a general reply to your post not directly a response to the accusation of racism

On a more general issue, how can " black" be racist and "white" not, I also wouldnt find myself in any way insulted by being called " not Polish" or "not European".

another issue altogether is if a black person calls a black person a word beginning with N, it is an acceptable greeting but not if used by a white person??
double standards perhaps?

Another quandry; HOw many people have bee arrested for being racist towards white/ English/British people?

yet another; how many people have been arrested for homophobic remarks

yet more, for using terms offensive to Gypsies, dwarf or tall people, Chinese, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Protestant, Catholic, fat or thin people, less abled etc

I think we need some common sense used by our " politically correct" brigade dont you ?

regards
BGFL

Woman arrested over racist rant in My Tram Experience YouTube video - mirror.co.uk

Transcript of the rant. She used the word f****** in front of Polish and Brown, which does change the context. Also, I am curious as to where this place she refers to as "Nigafrica" :rollaugh:

One of the Strictly come Dancing judges was mugged a couple of weeks ago, he wrote on Twitter 'I've just been mugged by a Black man' and a few more details about the incident...never mind the poor man being mugged, guess what people were 'outraged' by?....the fact that he said the man was Black!! apparently he shouldn't have mentioned skin colour!

Such a strange world we're living in. Sometimes I feel like the people at the top are purposely trying to create some kind of tension. Even the most 'PC' people out there are starting to get fed up it would seem.

The Nigafrica bit had me in stitches... maybe she was going to say Nigeria and then changed her mind to the whole of Africa instead. Doubt she's ever stepped outside of London.

Having watched the video, I'd say that freedom of speech has nothing to do with it. It was an apparently unprovoked verbal attack on everyone there who wasn't white and British. If it wasn't for the fact she had a child on her lap, I think the guy behind her may well have belted her.

She seemed to be out of it on something and frankly, her English was the worst there!

Conspiracy to incite racial hatred is one charge that springs to mind.

Swearing is no longer an arrestable offense,

Swearing in public is still an arrestable/fineable offence under anti-social behaviour laws.

The law is very complex, so just because a judge has ruled that 'yobs swearing at police officers' (to quote the above) is not arrestable, doesn't apply to everything.

The term arrestable offence was abolished in 2007 and was replaced by a number of conditions.
