Do have a look.
Common Dreams is excellent, Sunanda. And if you scroll down on the left-hand side, you will see lots of other good sites listed underneath the title "Periodically."
Here are some others that you might find of interest (if you're not already aware of them):

Haha!! Believe me, I know the feeling. Since we Americans are fed so much propaganda here in the U.S., I get most of my news from the BBC or the sites listed above on the internet.
As far as television, we only have PBS (Public Broadcasting System), but even some of the programs on PBS are now being bought out by private, for-profit media conglomerates. In the past, it received major funding from corporations like AT&T and others, but now these corporate conglomerates are buying the programs themselves. See "The Public Broadcasting System":
http://www.fair.org/media-outlets/pbs.html
MSNBC owns Fox news, and MSNBC is owned by Microsoft and G.E., so news that runs contrary to their interests tends to be excluded. Corporate conglomerates focus almost exclusively on attaining higher ratings -- not delivering critical information that the American public needs to make informed decisions. Fox News is most definitely biased, and the problem with Fox News is that liberals are given 20% airtime, while conservatives are given 80%. As we all know, any news show that does not provide 50/50 airtime for both sides is slanted. True journalism is not supposed to take sides; rather, it is supposed to merely report the news. And that's something we see less and less of these days, unfortunately.
Here is an interesting site on this issue:
"What's Wrong With the News?"
http://www.fair.org/media-woes/media-woes.html
Also, "Meet the Myth-Makers":

I suppose the only truly unbiased TV news source these days is C-Span. But any news shows with commentators or discussion groups are more and more slanted to the far right here in America, I'm afraid.

Now, THAT ought to keep you busy for a while!! Hahaha! [8D]

Hi Satori,
I've just moved this thread in here from Interesting Websites, as agreed with sunanda.
Thanks to you for what looks like a very comprehensive list of resources, and your inputs on American broadcasting companies. So, you come sailing across the 'pond' to tune in to Auntie BBC, as affectionately known here! 😀
Thanks to sunanda for starting the thread. 🙂

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing, actually ... that this information would be good to have over in the Current Affairs section. Just goes to show that great minds think alike! 😉 😀

You're welcome. Haha ... yes, I do! In fact, I have the BBC World News bookmarked on my computer, and even used to have it as my homepage at one time. It provides the most comprehensive up-to-date news around. 🙂
RE: News for the progressive community
Hi sunanda,
Are you referring to the headline on this newspage, or to the website per se?
Love,
Patsy.

RE: News for the progressive community
Patsy, as sunanda is currently offline, may I say that it looks to me as if the headline changes daily on the website.
Sunanda originally posted on 2nd August, and today's headline carries today's date.

another american seeks help from UK...
I'm here to say THANK YOU to my UK buds, and to BBC, and to all that helps us americans sort through all the &%* we're fed. I agree whole-heartedly with Satori, it's pretty tough to find the whole truth when it's all mucked up in who makes the biggest buck.
I was just about to start a similar thread, one posing the question: Why is it we must look abroad to find out what we should be doing here?!?!?
So, I see, it's already begun, and thanks for starting this thread!

RE: News for the progressive community
Sorry Sundana but the BBC is very British Goverment orientated.Used to be a lot better but went downhill in Lady Thatchers day. I get my news from IOL, Aljeezera Pravda ,and other online newspapers.Blogs from your country. The BBC dont know that we have 15 people on a jury here, and reported last week on a high profile case here that their were 6men and 5women on the jury. Obviuosly the dont want to know if they cant get a simple thing like that right. Made up in London. Never beleive what you hear on the radio,or read in the newspapers.

It wasn't me who was singing the praises of the BBC but our American friends.
Patsy - Holistic's right. I was just giving the link to the website per se.

Thanks for thanking "us", Gayle.
I do know what you mean. I lived in the States before even the days of the internet, and more than half my friends emigrated there as a big bunch together. There are a couple of moans, though they do choose to remain there for the better lifestyle, that they consistently mention. One is the lack of news. The first time I arrived in the USA as in independent adult was in LA. I put the TV on in the motel pretty soon, and was astonished to find that not only was the news not international (as ours is) - it didn't ever go beyond S. California!
I also lived behind the Iron Curtain during communist times. A stand-by then (though you could be arrested for it) was the BBC World Service on radio. It takes quite a bit of finding mind you. But it's so international and also impartial. It may not be a bad idea in America to hear the BBC World Service news over the radio, or maybe it's on the net now? 15 or 30 minutes quickly sums up the world.
Off-topic, but I have to say that the USSR brought in "Radio Moscow" designed to combat the BBC -- they spoke English in "BBC accents" and it sounded the same, but was total propaganda - almost the opposite to the truth. I must admit that upon moving back here to the UK, our Sunday morning laugh-in was to lie in bed and do the opposite to what we did on the other side of the Curtain. We loved Radio Moscow! The lies were so funny we'd imitate and expand onthem and literally roll around laughing. Even the announcer seemed to have a twinge of humour in his voice, as if to say, "Look, I know you won't believe this, but it's the script in front of me!" 😀
