The buck stops no-where - it simply drowns under a flurry of cover-ups and spin. I can't actually remember the last time someone in authority held their hands up and just said sorry, sincerely, without immediately launching into a whole load of codswollop to try and exonerate themselves by whatever means possible.

May I humbly say Sir that it occurs to me, your request is somewhat long overdue,
Can I point you in the direction of: -

  • Wrongly freed murder and rape prisoners
  • The CSA disaster
  • The Family Credit debacle
  • The Tax Credits shambles
  • The Fraudulent but granted Passport applications muddle
  • The Illegal immigrants granted Security clearance and sensitive jobs joke
  • The emergency services fiasco
  • The non existence of WMDs in Iraq resulting in the deaths of 100’s of British Soldiers and £BN’s of tax payers money
  • The NHS IT programme and database
  • (I don’t even have one) But the Pension Fund raid
  • The Probation Service Computer System ... & Other failed IT systems include
  • Tax Self-assessment
  • Post Office
  • National Insurance

I don't know what all the fuss is for here, Rog. The BBC clearly says that Brown has apologised.

 But seriously, you really, honestly, couldn't make this up could you. Base a TV screenplay on such a thing and they'd reject it as "too far-fetched and impossible".

Trying all the time to resist the Black Adder joke of Brown calling out, "No, please don't go, Darling".

The one good thing to emerge is a big slap in the face for the ID card trick. Maybe it's God working in mysterious ways? Can CDs pass between the pearly gates?

Deja Vu! My employers lost all our details in exactly the same way in March 😮 After investigations it was discovered that the "missing" discs were in fact never created! Because of this I'm going to keep an open mind on this situation.

Hi all,

Funny this should happen just a week or two after i was told by a client (who works for the passport office) about the plans being set in motion regarding the information required when applying for the ID card !! (Sorry not sure how to link up past threads so forgive me if I repeat myself !!).

They're going to want to know .... all the normal stuff, Name D.O.B, Address, Bank account details, Mortgage Details, how much you earn and how much you owe !!

My client has subsequently told me that once the system is in place you will be unable to access a loan, mortgage, buy a house, car etc ... without an ID card as the ID system will be running "in league" with all major financial institutions and big busineses 😮 !!!

Can you imagine having all this information in one placed based on the events of recent days !!! I find it unbelieveable that the government are going to bring this in by the back door !!! When i asked my client what she and those working at the passport office (who will be issuing the cards) thought she said many are really against it and felt (quite correctly i think) that if the general public had any idea what information will be taken and held there would be uproar !!!! "Of course", she added, "I really shouldn't be telling you this cos i've signed the Official Secrets Act, but i think its a disgrace" !!!

They're going to have us over a barrel ....

Well, what can I add to this debate? The very thing that I have been banging on about for 2yrs re the risk of ID card info has happened.

Mind you, as Roger already posted, in the ID card debate, others had been "banging on" about "If you're innocent, what have you got to be afraid of?" So here's a kind of example. There's a kind of individual and also national protection in what America calls libertarianism, or keeping as much independence and freedom for the individual, and power away from government, as possible.

i agree with you the id cards will be impossible i was talking to someone who works in the benfit offices not the one where the discs have gone from, but they said to me the chances are it will turn up on someone desk as someone who were surposed to do something with probley had not but i am pleased i get my child benefit paind into the post office and least then they have no other details about me just name d o b and address which is bad enough, i know friends that have been checking their bank accounts, so this on top of the northern rock fiasoco what else could happen i know we wont get id cards we will now get a number tattooed on us to let them know who we are or maybe a chip inserted in our brains then they know what we are thinking too. sorry for having abit of a rant about this but it seems to me that this country is a big mess and the moment as a people we are being taken for a country of mugs

With a nod to Geoff off of Virgin Radio.

It's probably like when you buy a couple of CDs from Amazon on-line and they won't fit through through the letter box.

They put a little card through advising you it with a neighbour and it's got mixed up with all the junk mail and the pizza delivery leaflets.;)

I hear they've now tracked down the perpetrator who stole all these details of children in the UK.

He is reported as being one Mr. S. Clause of Lapland.

As some of you know,I returned to Oz last month but before I did, phoned up the International pensions dept to transfer my old age pension across to a bank account in Oz.
I did this at the beginning of Oct for pension to be transfered from November payment which should have been transfered at the beginning of November. My next payment should be transfered at the end of November. It is paid in every four weeks or should be.
I am still waiting for November's payment from the beginning of November.
I think a phone call tonight should be in order to ask politely where the hell my pension is!

I realise this is old news by now, having been overtaken by teddy bears and other stuff, but I've been meaning to ask for a while now whether or not I've missed something: the thing is that several reports have said that the CDs were sent 'by post' but they weren't, were they? They were sent by TNT courier. So my point is, what were the mechanics of this? Did a motorbike courier pick them up and put them in his pannier? Who was the guy? What did he do with them after this? What were the mechanics of the operation? Who was actually personally responsible for getting this package to its destination? Did the police start searching rubbish dumps because someone at TNT coughed to having thrown the things away? If so, why?

So, I ask again, have I missed something....have these questions been publicly asked and answered? If not, why not?
