Today is International Women's day and a public holiday in many countries. Not only is it time to celebrate the developed world's advancements in women's rights and health care, but there is still so much more that needs to be achieved globally.

Women's rights are far more than having the right to vote and equal pay, but in many parts of the world it's about having basic human rights, education and health care.

Without women's rights there's no equality, without equality there's no humanity.

Myarka.

Did anyone know that it was International Women's Day today? I didn't. What happens on International Women's Day?

In case you were wondering, International Men's Day is on 19th November.

Hi Celtia,

I've merged your thread with the one started this morning.

Its very badly publicised in this country - I know america and some european countries do more. I "think" its to celebrate the role and achievements of women but I am not a 100% sure.

Have googled.. hmm close in my answer but not complete...

http://www.internationalwomensday.com/

" International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future."

Some countries even have it as a holiday?! (would that be for men and women? lol)

xx

Note - I was posting my reply and the post disappeared..I guess I hit it mid move to mix with myarka's one...

Oops. Sorry. Didn't see the one this morning. Yes. Very badly publicised in the UK. Wonder why?

We live in a country that is suspicious of popular movements that come from the people. IWD has its roots in socialism, which to many is a swear word. Although today IWD is supported by the UN and therefore one of the world's mainstream organisations.

The is still a lot of work to do and progress has been very slow. In some countries women's rights are going backwards because the developed world is more interested in globalisation than human rights.

So yes, IWD should be better known in the UK and the issues that it fights for should bought into the public eye.

In Russia, women and girls gets lots of flowers, chocolates and gifts on Women's Day, and men do the housework! (which is typically the only day in the year when they do).

I'd never heard of it until my other half told me about it. In his country, Algeria, the women really go for it!! They go out wearing their best clothes and have a proper celebration! When I spoke to my future female in-laws yesterday on the webcam they were wishing me a Happy Women's Day and didn't realise that we don't celebrate it. I wouldn't really know how to celebrate it...
