Hi Dunkirk,

That's a fair point and I agree that things need to be discussed and explored in order for opinions to be made. There have been some good points made in this discussion, I was referring more to the posts that have been made by people who just seem to want to moan for the sake of it.

Here are some links I found which I thought you might like to check out:

EDIT: Title line

Thank You LemonBird for sharing the above links. It is certainly good to be positive. After all 'Dunkirk' was all about salvaging the positivefrom a bad situation 😉

I am sick and fed up too . . . i visited my best friend the other day and her 6 year old daughter is upset by all the "bad men" on the television. She is worried that someone will come in and shoot her. Her 4 year old cousin said "Don't worry I'll shoot them first". This upsets me and my friend. . she does so much to make her daughter's life safe . . and then there are these nasty outside influences.

One has to ask why your friend is letting her 6 yr old daughter watch "bad men" on television? Watching the over hyped and generally depressing news (and other programs) on TV is something that effects adults in a negative way, so it really shouldn't be something that a child is watching. They should be watching CITV or something like that.

Love and Reiki Hugs

Yep, good point Energlz. I think I was sloppy in my posting. She doesn't let her daughter watch the news. She herself in fact mostly avoids it and most telly. But sometimes her daughter will catch bits of it. And its mainly the kids in the playground her daughter is learningabout the violence in societyfrom - by that I mean that kids to role play what they have seen on the telly. I don't believe we can hide the kids away from the world anyway, that's not the answer. . the answer is to make a world we are happy to have our kids living in . . not one we feel we have to hide them from. I know how sanctimonious that sounds, and that it's much easier said than done.

RE: Getting fed up with this country

Hi,

Before the general election in 1997 New Labour's campaign song was 'Things Can Only Get Better'. Most people that have contributed to this thread seem to be suggesting that things haven't got better. In fact many have pointed to some very sinister developments in government and in wider society.

Given that Blair has won 3 elections in the last 10 years I am surprised that no one on this forum has come forward and defended this government's record. The pace of reform that has been introduced over the period in question has been remarkable. Surely there must be someone who would speak in favour of the present administration.

RE: Getting fed up with this country

During the tory government, they were decimating the NHS and as a nurse during this 'era'. We all rejoiced when Labour got in with all their promises. The atmosphere was palpable. I even rememberJohn Prescott (then minister of health) saying we can't have the nurses continued to be 'duffed up' (his words). Well they are still being duffed up, theNHS is still in crisis.
Labours promises were hollow they have been no better than the tories. In fact instead of calling themselves New Labour they should call themselves New tories, because thats what they are.
I have been a socialist all my electoral life, but not anymore.
The two main parties do Britain and its people no good at all.

Labour is building a police state and tories are for the toffs in this world and also the tories will repeal the fox hunting ban (is it banned?. My foot!!).

The politiacal parties are corruptand look after their own.

The next election I will either not bother or vote Green party. (Thats if I havent won the lotto and emigrated to NZ).

Until recent years I love Britain and all it stood for and the thought of emigrating was zero, but not anymore.

Are you playing devil's advocate here, Dunkirk? 😀

Actually, I can only agree with caring soul. I remember rejoicing in 1997 when Labour got in. There was such a sense of optimism about - they were going to make everything just and fair again. Ho ho, excuse me while I die laughing. I think all of us who were Labour supporters feel totally embittered and betrayed now. The New Golden Age never happened.

Do you remember the movie Wall Street? 'Greed is good' said the Michael Douglas character, echoingly the ethos of the City fatcats and Thatcher's cohorts. ('There's no such thing as society' was her infamous pronouncement.)

So I, and I'm sure many others, believed in Tony Blair's youth and enthusiasm and now we have found that the Emperor didn't have any new clothes after all and we feel stupid for believing that he did.

This government, to me, stinks of corruption and muddle. Where are the men and women of integrity? Dead, like John Smith and Robin Cook and Mo Mowlam. Or resigned in disgust like Clare Short. Will Cameron be any better? My disillusion tells me no.

Yesterday, here in India, I read an editorial in the leading English language broadsheet newspaper asking when Blair will go. It said that he looks and sounds a broken man and is facing strong criticism from his own benches with regard to cancelling the enquiry into the BAe Saudi bribes scandal 'in the interest of national security'. And when he finally does go, whoever wants Brown as PM?

Truly I'm not just moaning and complaining...I'm holding my head in my hands in despair.

With love (and in the certain knowledge that All Shall Be Well)
Sunanda xxxx
