Did anyone else hear about this? A mother who was just about to give birth, delayed other patients surgery by just popping out for a fag!! [sm=cool-smiley-027.gif] Because the anaesthetist told her 'You've seen your daughter born. If you give up smoking you might see her get married too.'
Also because she was coughing from the said fag, the Doctor found it hard to administer an epidural.
Well what about it you may ask! This mother has now sued the hospital/Doctor stating because of his comments she suffered severe post-natal stress. She has been awarded £44,500
[sm=banghead.gif] If anyone actually agrees with her being awarded anything, this head banging will be for real.
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Jeannie, with respect ... do you have a link to online validation of this story?
It also seems a little uncertain from your post the point at which this woman 'popped out for a fag' ... before or AFTER the birth?

RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Hi Jeannie
Yes you are right, it was in the papers (so it must be true).
He/she I suppose was out of order for saying such a thing, but I guess exasperation took over.
These pay outs are costing this country a fortune.
I am all for payments for negligence where someone is left severely disabled because of some NHS blunder, but this sort of thing is ridiculous.

'You've seen your daughter born. If you give up smoking you might see her get married too.'
If he/she said it to mywife or daughter -there'd be trouble - whoever they are, considering the work in the health profession... you'd think they know the facts on death rates and ages!

All I've heard this week (while out doing Christmas shopping) is people coughing... from babies to old women - I live in a very middleclass almost wholly non smoking area... so what's that about?... Passive virtual smoking is it?

Yeah I agree with her being awarded something... so go ahead, knock yerself out 🙂
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Okey doke, done it [sm=banghead.gif] just knew there would be someone out there!!!!
Stupid, ignornant woman holding up the medical profession, damaging her unborn child etc., etc., Most Doctors are fully aware of the effects of smoking and they should be allowed to give someone a stern talking to. Exactly the same as if she were nipping out for a shot of heroin, I suppose that would be different though eh!
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
How's yer grip on past, present and future... or even just general continuity jeannie?:D

- So baby is not born yet right?
Because the anaesthetist told her 'You've seen your daughter born. If you give up smoking you might see her get married too.'
... Whoops, mybad... baby is born
Also because she was coughing from the said fag, the Doctor found it hard to administer an epidural.
...er no soz baby is not born again... unless they give epidurals after you give birth nowadays?

Ignorant, damaging unborn child? ... You might want to do some research on effects, damage and deaths from anaesthetics...
But I suppose the Anaesthist was within his rights... histitle is derived from the Greek for "without feeling" 😉
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
My point(s) entirely! 😉 And I can't find anything online ... perhaps I'm using the wrong search words?
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
My apologies, I did not make this up, just thought it would be an interesting thread after reading and quoting from the newspaper.Didn't really need all the sarcasm conspiritualist, but never mind, bye.
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
No one was suggesting you made it up, jeannie, least of all me. I asked if you could provide a link to the story which, you must admit, seemed somewhat unclear in the first telling.
I obviously DID use the wrong key words when searching yesterday. I've just found this link, which in turn leads to some 46 comments so far, some infinitely more pithy (yes, I have spelled that correctly! ;)) than those here:
[link= http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health/healthmain.html?in_article_id=424093&in_page_id=1774&in_a_source ]http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health/healthmain.html?in_article_id=424093&in_page_id=1774&in_a_source[/link]=
Two things I have observed in my almostthree years on HP:
One is that if people relate a story read in the newspapers and that story is not substantiated with an online link or some other tangible evidence, there is huge potential for a wild discussion to ensue with people going off at wild tangents about what they 'think' they've read.
The other is thatoccasionally people do seem to 'rub each other up the wrong way', which is almost inevitable when you consider the diversity of HPs great membership ... and I mean 'great' in both senses of the word 😉
When that happens, it seems to me thatwe all havechoices. To either:
React
Respond
Ignore
Personally, I consider the latter two to be the wisest choices, otherwise too much of this: [sm=banghead.gif] [sm=banghead.gif][sm=banghead.gif] can turn into
this:
Not very [sm=xmas-smiley-007.gif]
May I wish everybody a very happy and PEACEFUL one.

RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Hi Jeannie
Just wanted to let you know that I had heard of the new story before Holistic added in the link and I completely agree with you. I am all for sympathy, thoughtfulness etc etc but the way we are going we will be afraid to talk to each other in case we are sued or someone takes it the wrong way.
Yes, so maybe the doctor/whomever should have held their tongue at what can be a difficult and emotional time for a woman (I mean the childbirth, not the fag break!) but to sue them for it is just being money-grabbing and ridiculous.

RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Hello Jeannie,
I just wanted to add that I too head this amazing story. It is just another nail in the NHS coffin (scuse the pun!), they are likely to hit with a double wammy, pay conpensation for upsetting her and then later spend loads more money trying to put her smoke damaged health right, and possibly the health of the people she lives with (unless she is one of thoses who smoke outside), this country is becomming more like the USA each year. Smoker or non-smoker EVERYBODY knows it is not going to do you any good, it maybe a choise, but lets face it, it ain't a very wise one is it? I think the Doctor was well within his rights, afterall she was in a healthcare establishment.
Parhaps the answer is not to say anything to anyone just in case it may upset them, the silent majority?
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
It is not his job to predict the future and it was massively un professional to give an emotion driven opinion to someone who has totrust them. The timing was inappropriate at the very least.
This said I can understand the frustration that must plague theperson who is tasked withmonitoring the patients oxygen levels whilst they are in his care, when he watches them fill their system with carboxyheamaglobin which actually blocks the uptake of oxygen.
If this was before the birth the child is in the same boat butis about to havethe massive oxygen resouvoir (?) it has relied on for the last 9 mths cut off.
NHS coffin? Private clinic no?
How about we call it natural selection and smile smuggly at the increased life chances of our organic, none smoking, free range, middle class offspring who will be the super humans of tomorrow. Oops been reading Huxley again.
going for a spliff.
jono.
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
Hi Jeannie,
I have read your comments and i agree with you 100% on this issue.
I am very anti-smoking and feel that any mother who smokes during a pregnancy is very selfish indeed. I don't really care if people find smoking increadibly hard to give up (and i can imagine this would be very hard), but when the health of your unborn baby is at stake, i'm afraid that i would find the willpower form somewhere to give up the habit.
Im not surprised the doctor made the comment he did, i think i would have too...........but this is just my opinion.
I can imagine what sort of person would decide to sue after an incident like this......the world has gone money mad.
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
It certainly has......................
"Money makes the world go around, the world go around............................"
RE: Birth 'Abuse'
firstly, can i just say that i'm a smoker.. I'll be giving up tomorrow though, determined to do it this time.. i'm driven by this thread if nothing else!! 😀
but i don't understand any woman who smokes during pregnancy, let alone feels the need to pop out for a fag during labour.. surely her concerns should've been with the huge life changing event that was about to take place..?
i'd say the doctor was within his rights to express his opinion but he could've done it in a more tactile manner.. he was proabablyso stunned by her actions that his tongue just ran away with him..
