Over the past few years i've not voted due to moving house a lot and not getting my act together in time to vote but this time I have managed it and I wanted to vote this year as it was a general election.
I found this website which has really helped me decide who to vote for. http://voteforpolicies.org.uk/
It has a survey on it and takes you through each area such as environment, crime, education etc. and lists the poilicies of 6 political parties but doesn't tell you which party the policy belongs to at that point so that you can make an decision on the policies rather than on who the party is. It then gives you the answer at the end as a percentage on which party you agree most on.
My results were 83% Green Party.
Just thought I'd share this with people especially for those who don't know who to vote for.
I don't know who to vote for because either Labour or Conservative will get in and they are both as bad as each other IMHO. Whatever their policies are doesn't mean they will follow them once elected. I shall look at your link Lavandula and wouldn't be at all surprised to find myself with the Greens too. But do they have a chance of getting into power? Not a lot. However a vote for the Lib Dems or the Greens must send a message to the politicians.....I hope.
Edit to say I got 50% Green, 25% Conservatives, 25% Lib Dems! Oops. But interesting that the Greens are leading overall....Intriguing link, Lavandula, thanks for posting it.
I thought it was very interesting that the Greens were in the lead based on the results of the survey and if everyone voted based on their survey result (and more people were made aware of this tool) maybe the Greens have more of a chance of getting it.
Thanks Lavandula for a great link.
It was interesting to see the policies without these being part of a party manifesto (although I think the UKIP or BNP ones were easy to spot!).
I found my responses to each policy area really were about the consequences of that policy, whose interests it protects, whether implementing this or that policy was intended to be for the collective good (am all for that :)) or protected one groups interests at the expense of anothers.
Great exercise for having to really consider policy, over party alliegiance, self interest, and to avoid the personality cult of 'whose your favourite politician?' I'm going to circulate it around, as you're right it needs to be shared.
My results were 55% Labour, 33% Green, 12% Lib Dem.
It would maybe encouarge more people to vote, if we had proportional respresentation, so that a Green vote or a Lib Dem vote actually counted.
PR was mentioned in several of the policies, but it is often mentioned by those not in power at the time, and then quietly shelved once they win! Maybe a change to the electoral system would go a long way to restoring confidence in politics, becuase our participation would be reflected in the make up of parliament? It may also leave politicians in the rightful place of being public servants and representatives for a collective good, rather than a narrow set of interests.
Thanks again
El
I came out at 50%green and 50% conservative. As I wont be voting as I cant get to the ballot box too vote. Its a moot point.
Thanks for the link, I came out 44% Green, 33% Conservative which wasn't a surprise... The effect of the media focusing on Lab/Cons and perhaps people's entrenched support of who they've always voted for means that nothing ever changes...

That's only 77% John. Want to tell us what the other 23% was?;)
Sorry can't be a****d to do the survey but I will vote.
Could never bring myself to vote Labour, Blair is a war criminal in my eyes who has brought his party down to gutter level. Along with this and Brown and the Banking crisis.
David Cameron is a good speaker but what exactly do they stand for.
The Lib Dems are a wasted vote.
After the expenses scandal I wouldn't trust any of them as further than I could throw them.
I will waste my vote but probably vote UKIP which I have done before.
It's not really a survey as such, OB. Have a look at it; it doesn't take long and it's very interesting.
xx
None of the questions gave a choice I would choose.

They weren't questions, Myarka. They were policies already formulated by the leading parties.

I still wouldn't choose any of them.

Interesting link, but my results did not reflect my own voting intentions. This is probably because I don't trust certain of the parties despite agreeing with certain of their stated policies. For instance, I don't trust the Conservatives, even though Cameron seems like a nice chap- because I remember what they did last time they were in power, and I suspect they are making a massive effort to appear to have changed when in fact maybe they haven't.
I don't necessarily agree with voting only on policies not personalities. for instance I agree with some of UKIP's policies in principle, but I'd never vote for them because when I hear their leaders on the radio they sound loud-mouthed and ignorant.
There's also the question of what would need to be done in order to implement the policies. For instance, some policies sound good but would cost huge amounts of money- which we don't have as we're already massively in debt. Again, other policies might be good but would require massive coercion of the public because they go so much against what most people want to do.
I just took the survey and it's funny how I got different results to a quiz on a Facebook page, 'Democracy UK on Facebook'. For this one, the highest result I got was 50% for the Green Party. The Facebook one was awful... it came out as quite high for UKIP and I've heard various UKIP MPs talking over recent weeks and there's so much about them I disagree with.
I can't see myself voting either Green or UKIP, to be honest.
I'm looking forward to the tv debates which start tonight!
