I personally think there's nothing wrong with having a reiki symbol tattoo. It's a very individual thing and if it's significant to you personally, then go for it. 🙂

no - the ink is 'surprisingly enough' not poisonous. Otherwise tattoists wouldn't get many repeat customers! To be honest, touching the ink on a computer print out while its still warm is far more dangerous (and actually, can become absorbed through the skin).
The symbols are active , if the weren't then Reiki would not work

I have to say, although i know its off topic,i don't think that Usui actually empowered the symbols or the ideas, merely tapped into an existing process, using the symbols (or words they stood for in Chinese script) to explain the principles. The distance healing 'symbol', for example,is clearly a chinese phrase meaning words to the effect of 'there is no distance, there is no time' i.e. distance is immaterial for practicing reiki, as long as your visualisation is clear.

Actually, the HSZSN is a Japanese phrase, and has little or nothing to do with the concept of 'no distance, no time' or the other similar "there is no past, no present, no future" phrase which is commonly given as its translation
Probably one of the clearest translations of HSZSN is actually:
"Correct Thought (Correct Mindfulness) is the essence of being"
[In some Japanese styles - Hekikuu Reiki for example - HSZSN is not taught as a 'distant' symbol, but rather as one pertaining to mindfulness and the mental faculties in general]
