I live on Gulf Coast of Mississippi, but I am a Yankee from Maryland, just outside of Washington DC.
The Gulf of Mexico has been severely injured by the oil spill. Some are saying it is dead. Dolphins are miscarriaging and even just washing up dead. Just last week people have been hospitalized because they went to the beach. It's common knowledge that there is a dead zone because of fertilizers coming from the Mississippi River. But it is "under news" (I don't know what else to call it; the news that is not on tv) that says there is a lake of oil at the bottom of the gulf that is going nowhere. I can tell you that I don't eat anything that comes out of there. I eat farmed fish.
So, I'm wondering if we could heal the gulf? I saw a video on youtube where a few doctors gave energy to a woman with bladder cancer and watched in real time (3 minutes) as it disappeared (on a sonogram). I don't see why I couldn't get reiki technicians together and we could heal the gulf? Or even if they need to be here?
Or how many people are needed? Christ said "with faith you can say to the mountain move and...." he was our example, one of our teachers. Anything he did we can do? Anything he said we could do we can do? Right?
So, theoretically, you or I could go to the shore (or sit in our chair) and heal the Gulf of Mexico? I have to tell you...it took a lot of nerve to write that sentence.

Reiki works by producing an environment in the body where healing can occur. But I am always careful to tell people it isn't a miracle cure. Having said that miracles can and do happen. People DO recover from cancer. My cynical head says the video on Youtube has been doctored in some way (sorry) - but I know miracles CAN happen.
The gulf is an ecosystem not a body, but I don't see why people couldn't send reiki to 'heal' it. After all you can send reiki to war situations (so I am told)
I guess as with everything its all about intention.
However I don't think the gulf would clear up overnight. Ecosystems rect badly to sudden change in either direction.
I hear what you are saying.
I also have those kinds of voices in my head (the spiritual, the hopeful, the skeptical, the critical and the non believing). I get it 🙂
But, reiki doesn't respect time and space. Reiki is not limited. Reiki is not bound by our perceptions. If we can visualize that the oil is not at the bottom of the gulf? If we can visualize that the gulf is healthy? If we can visualize the water clean and vital (full of oxygen and teaming with life)? That the lifeforms in the water are healthy and reproductive. The babies come easily and healthy...
If we can do this (without attachment to the outcome) and the universe sees fit to respond?
