Re: Reiki Master jailed for abusing patients - Telegraph
Well, that's a very uncomfortable article.
The other year there was a sincere Reiki practitioner who was scolded by the courts to stop advertising Reiki in a certain way. It was something about the claims of healing that her advertising made Reiki out to cure. Could someone remind me of that person or case with specific keywords that will result in the article(s) appearing in a search? I've tried and just can't find the right keywords at this time.
Returning to the original topic, I think that this is a significant event that will begin to change the public view of Reiki as a practice.
Disgusting what how he had abused their trust . This could potentially be damaging the the respect of Reiki and possibly a historical turning point for Reiki therapy. Wouldn't surprise me that a CRB check will become mandatory before anyone starts a buisness in Reiki.
Long term effects could follow the 'false psychics stigma'.
Yet in light of this news maybe some form of new regulation and register to protect the vunerable is required?.
I have a strong feeling it is going to become a pivotal point in Reiki therapy.
Reputation of the certifying Reiki teacher is at stake (as many Reiki practitioners have a tendency to display their training certificates), and then there's the business matter of insurance.
Yet in light of this news maybe some form of new regulation and register to protect the vunerable is required?.
There is a register already set up. It is part of the Voluntary Self Regulation (VSR) process set up by the last government. There are also National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Reiki which define the minimum level of knowledge and competence required for registration. You can fine more information on the Reiki Council and/or the CNHC website.
It was something about the claims of healing that her advertising made Reiki out to cure.
I do not remember that particular case, but this matter has been discussed at CNHC and Reiki Council meetings. The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has been acting on complaints lodged by a dedicated group of people that are specifically targeting complementary therapists. The ASA will act on any claim that is made by a therapist if the claim cannot be backed up by valid peer reviewed scientific evidence.
Hi,
I was also thrilled that the man was jailed. Even more thrilled as I was an expert witness in the case.
It did thrill me that a charlatan was finally being brought to justice. I think it will greatly help the world of healing - he did not just do Reiki but other healing practices too. We do need to become a serious profession and find a way to stop the unprofessional and poorly trained healer from practicing on a vulnerable public, Too often I hear of healers who should not be working with anyone except themselves, but there is still nothing that can be done. Voluntary legislation - a good start - but not enough.

Regulating competence is something we are doing, albeit on a voluntary basis, but I think the problem is that no amount of regulation can stop a determined sexual predator - look at doctors/dentists/teachers... etc The best we can hope for is a to bar known sexual offenders from registering and practising, but the problem is not all sexual offenders have been prosecuted or reported. It is a tricky problem, and I'm afraid there is no way to guarantee client safety, at best we can reduce the risk as much as possible.
The thing is, you can put all the regulations and checks into place you like, but if someone is of such a disgusting nature as that, then they will carry out the abuse anyway, and it's nothing to do with the profession, it's to do with their own individual self. I don't think one case is going to be sufficient to make it a pivotal point of the Reiki profession. You get sick people like this in all sorts of places and professions, and creating regulations isn't going to stop them, unfortunately.
As such, I think the subject of this thread "Reiki Crime - Abusing Patients" is incorrect. The crime is nothing to do with Reiki, the crime is just to do with a sick individual. Reiki was just one of the things he supposedly practiced and something he used as an excuse to perform his crime. If he didn't use Reiki, he would have used something else, but Reiki is in no way to blame for it.
