Hi everyone.

Delighted has inspired my questions...

Which is more popular, the Reiki Federation or the Reiki Council?

Are those the two principal Reiki organizations in the U.K.?

I ask because William Rand's ICRT seems to be the principal organization in the U.S. Recently I ran across a statement indicating they provide some 400 classes per year... and if 8 people attend each class, then that's 3,200 new Reiki practitioners each year as well. I do not know if the 400 classes per year figure includes teachers who teach only one person, so the number 8 that I used above is arbitrary and for illustration purposes only.

But I am wondering how many new Reiki Masters are emerging each year.

What are your thoughts and feelings about this?

So amazed that I have inspired someone! 😮

I can't answer the question re the two principal organisations within the UK but I can have a go at discussing the thought about zillions of reiki masters being spewed out :p

So... is one thinking of this negatively or positively? Are you of the opinion that reiki is becoming 'watered' down and the sacred aspect lost from the healing system? Or that there are two many teachers out there churning out 'master/teachers' that have only completed their reiki 1 and 2 that same weekend?

I actually learned my reiki 1 in 2006 and 2 in 2008. It has taken me a long time to even consider becoming a master/teacher and I am still not sure that I am capable of it..

Hmmmm. I guess I had not looked at my questions from that perspective... I was thinking in terms of the social and economic impact.

Socially speaking, if everyone is a Reiki Master, the playing field is leveled (so to speak).

If the playing field is leveled, then as a consequence the economics would be forced to change. For example, if a Reiki Master creates new Reiki Masters who teach their students the same system, where does that leave the original Reiki Master economically?

At this time, the original RM has no economic means of support based on the way the system currently operates.

I also believe that this dynamic will also change what is taught in Reiki as well, or perhaps "how" things are taught as well.

So back in the 70's, Takata prescribed the $10,000 fee out of frustration -- she made it clear that those who are willing to pay for it simply didn't respect it. It's clear to me that she cared deeply for her students and deeply for what she was teaching -- but those who didn't pay also didn't return any respect to her. I feel that she reacted to that situation in a natural way by prescribing a realistic boundary.

Now, $10,000 aside, that lack of respect is what happens to established Reiki Masters today... during the 70's and 80's a student was expected to remain loyal to their teacher, but today students "Master-Hop", and some times in secret. I participate in some private Reiki discussion groups where the presiding RM has expressed some frustration about what some other really popular RM is doing with their students, and have received private e-mails saying "I'm going to go and take the RM class through the other RM -- don't tell anyone". Afterwards I usually get an e-mail stating that the class from the competing RM wasn't anything special and was really just more of the same, except that the only difference was that the teaching RM was special because they were teaching Reiki....

Another dynamic influencing change is best represented by the rise and fall of James Deacon. Deacon emerged as a hero to many in the Reiki community because he was attending all these Reiki classes and then posting the information he got from the classes on his website, thus lessening the secrecy and specialness of the information that was otherwise so costly to obtain. Many RM's immediately began to capitalize on his efforts, one even copied many pages from his website and republished them as-is (excluding only the credit to James as an author) into a book. Because Deacon made the previously exclusive information freely available, anyone could just grab the information and begin "teaching Reiki" with it. Many did, and that dynamic causes the specific information taught within a Reiki class to be much less necessary -- after all, if a person can grab the information for free, why pay $,$$$ for the same???

I don't believe that the amount of new RM's will have a negative impact within the world of Reiki, but I believe it's going to force changes that appear to already be underway.

Getting a better idea of just how many RM's emerge each year simply helps me look at the situation with more information, and eventually from new perspectives.

Of course you are capable of it. When you do your Reiki Master/Teacher course, that is just the start of the journey to becoming a master... you will learn so much from that point onwards... 😉

First point if I can become a reiki master I am sure you can!! I hadn't even heard of reiki 4 years ago.

OK I am member of a UK reiki federation. I joined this because my master was a member. I also felt the UKRF approach to ethics, registration. training CPD etc fitted very well with the approach needed to get reiki out of the beauty rooms and into the hospitals. I am a retired hospital pharmacist so I have plenty of experience of conventional medicine and how it works.

I have only recently been attuned to level 3 teacher - but I know this is the right thing for me. As member of the UKRF I believe level 1 is for self healing and family and friends, level 2 is the level appropriate to offer reiki as part of a business.

My view is that the whole world should be attuned to reiki level 1 for the spiritual development it brings!!!! The world needs more spiritual people. Well I can dream can't i?

To progress to level 2 I believe students need to have some practical experience and show understanding of the responsibilities of being a healer. For me progression from 1 to 2 is NOT automatic.

I am not yet ready to attune any masters so I can't tell you what I will think is necessary.(But I will be following the guidelines form the UKRF)

Economically I don't think reiki on its own can provide a living. I also have hypnotherapy to offer and am considering learning other modalities as well. But every master attuned brings my dream a little bit closer as they can attune others to reiki level 1.

Thats my view fwiw

Whilst I did my own level 1 and 2 seperately, there were teachings given by Chujiro Hayashi (one of the master/teachers attuned by Usui - I think it was him if I remember by history correctly)... who taught levels 1 and 2 together over a couple of weeks to students, not really distinguishing one level from the other. I don't think there's anything wrong with people learning the content of the first two levels as part of one course, though it should be recognised by them that they still need to show dedication and put in the practice to what Reiki is and how to use it, and not just these people who get the attunements and then say "I'm a Reiki practitioner - I can now go and earn myself some money giving treatments" without any experience whatsoever.

I am not yet ready to attune any masters so I can't tell you what I will think is necessary.(But I will be following the guidelines form the UKRF)

I'm not a member of the UKRF, so don't know what their guidelines are, but I know what I'd be teaching to my students (if I were presently teaching, which I'm not due to other commitments). It would certainly involve gaining an understanding of what Reiki is, other than 'just a complementary therapy to make some money from', how it is part of our personal (spiritual if you like) growth, and what is and isn't Reiki, such as identifiying what are add-ins that some people have introduced from western society and other belief systems (that's not to say such things can't be used alongside Reiki, but knowing what is and what isn't Reiki should be clear). Plus, much other stuff, including how to perform attunements, what to cover in the classes, writing one's own manuals to show a true understanding of the teachings, and not just a copy/paste (I recall one 'Master' I met who was giving out manuals to students that were just a straight copy of those her master had given her, and when I asked about a certain aspect of the manual, she couldn't explain it and had no understanding of it) etc. There is so much to include, and it's certainly not just a case of giving an attunement, giving a certificate and saying "there you go, on your way". 😀

Economically I don't think reiki on its own can provide a living.

No, certainly not in todays western society at present. Those therapists earning good money are either in a niche market that targets certain sectors who demand their particular skills (in which case the competition can be very tough) or they are able to offer a wide range of therapies and treatments to cater for all the different people who are seeking help and what those people choose to want.

I also have hypnotherapy to offer and am considering learning other modalities as well.

Hypno's good. You could combine that with NLP, Life Coaching, Timeline Therapy, and some CBT, to create a powerful toolkit in that field of therapy (and CBT is also accepted by the health service for referral of some patients with e.g. depression or confidence issues etc.)

But every master attuned brings my dream a little bit closer as they can attune others to reiki level 1.

Assuming they're doing it for the right reasons and doing it well... absolutely agree. 🙂

All Love and Reiki Hugs
