I believe that the primary difference between Reiki and Quantum Touch is that Reiki only has a few hand positions and is becoming religious in nature, while Quantum Touch has the potential to have a wide array of hand positions for treatments and is genuinely spiritual in nature (meaning there is no homage to a spiritual icon like Usui, mystical symbols, or mantras)
While this may be true for certain forms of Reiki, it is not representative of traditional Usui Reiki. Traditional Usui Reiki is an intuitive and practical healing method that is not religious, rather it is a means of spiritual development.
Re: Hand Positions
Hand positions are not used as such. Hands are placed at areas of byosen or areas of healing need, e.g. if a client has a broken toe, the hand is placed over the broken toe. There are not 'limited hand positions'.
Re: Symbols & Mantras
The symbols (shirushi) and mantras (jumon/kotodama) are the mechanism for connecting to the energy. The use of symbols, words and sounds are part of Japanese culture as well as part of Japanese spiritual beliefs. Their use does not make Reiki a religious art.
Thank you for your replies. I feel that as someone attuned to reiki, when I begin pulling in ki for QT, I feel as though reiki comes through already so i don't feel fair in giving an opinion on QT.
And while some people warp and add to the teachings of reiki *cough angelic reiki cough*. These aren't the traditional teachings, I truly believe it has no religious roots and any that are added are the personal preference of the channeler. And I agree with omega, the hand positions are guidance, otherwise you are meant to let reiki and intuition guide you
Hi Finalshine.

I like Quantum Touch and sometimes do work with another practitioner who does Quantum Touch. I personally prefer Reiki, because it works best for me. It´s a personal thing. However, I do want to clarify what I am kind of surprised to read above.
- Reiki has as many hand positions as you like. It really depends on your training and how good your association and Reiki Master are at supporting and nurturing your progress.
- A good Reiki Master would not pay homage to any icons, Usui or otherwise, and would impart that onto their fledgling healers and practitioners. In Reiki, we do have a lineage system, so that we know where our attunement came from, which is a nice thing ensuring authenticity of the attunement, but that´s all.
- There are also no mantras in Reiki, but 5 Principles which are good for anyone to try and live their lives by. I have given many treatments that did not even include Reiki, and at the end of the treatment gave a Reiki Principle to the client as calming homework, which they used, and it helped them. Can you imagine, the strength of being able to let go of anger, for example? How calm everyone would be if they tried that! Every day, saying thanks for your many blessings is now re-worked and re-invented by the Law of Attraction folk, and rightly so, because it works. Having said that, it is not necessary for anyone to say the Reiki Principles. But they do help one live a better life, and it is one of the reasons why I like Reiki.
- Although Reiki is not religious, I believe that in some countries, the powers-that-be would only accept it if it is defined as a religion. This is for the same reason that you see many USA life coaches or healers with a Church Minister´s license, as they may not treat a client otherwise.
- The symbols in Reiki are published on many websites worldwide. They are not mystical. Each symbol has and carries a meaning. Let me try and explain. I can show you someone´s body reacting with kinesiology-based muscle-testing to a word that I have written on a piece of paper, even if neither of us knows what this word is. Their body knows. Somehow, we are all connected, and there is a shared knowledge that we energetically intuit. And when a symbol is drawn, it carries its intention for the healing, imho in the same way. I used to think the symbols were hogwash, but now that I use them regularly, I find them helpful at quickly and easily concentrating my intention.
Anyway, if anyone is thinking of QT training, go for it. If you are thinking of Reiki training, go for it. See what works for you; you may even be surprised to like using both at the same time! I know some healers do 🙂
Well, "actions speak louder than words," and people outside of Reiki are judging its practitioners (perhaps "discriminating against" its practitioners says it better) based not on claims from practitioners that it is not religious but rather the actions of those practitioners.

There are over 140 forms of Reiki that are recognised as Reiki and many more that are called Reiki and are not related to Usui-sensei's method. Reiki has become a blanket term to describe so many different forms of practice that now when someone says anything about 'Reiki' it is pretty meaningless unless they specify what form of Reiki (if it is actually Reiki at all) they are referring to. The other factor is the individual practitioner and the things they add or change to the Reiki they have been taught. So, in essence, it is a little unjust to attach judgement to Reiki based on the actions of certain practitioners that may or may not be practising Usui Reiki.

I do not disagree with you, but it is what is happening.
I would like to revive this topic if possible. I'm reiki 2 and am picking up QT from the book. I'd like to be objective and fair as I go. From what I've tried so far, it doesn't feel any stronger than reiki and the insistence on breath work is a little tiring while continuously pulling energy from the air and feet up to your crown and down to your arms.
I have a colleague who has done his QT 2 so I'll ask him for advice as well. What are other peoples opinions? At the moment, I feel as though it's just energy healing that drains the healer but you're pulling ki from around you with the breathing to keep you going.
Sounds like you're trying to hard. Most people do. I tend to use Alexanders/Pilates principles on breathing these days. That is to keep the pelvic and abdominal girdles engaged and continue to draw upwards, as you would in pilates and to breathe laterally. I avoid engaging the scalenes and chest breathing, or atleast ensure the scalenes aren't over taxed.
If you are pulling Ki from around you, this is what creates the field to which the client entrains, then your client can't take your energy.
You won't feel the extra strength of QT, your client will. Provided you're not standing in the way of the energy. It takes practice, keep going with it. It really is beautiful once you get it.
Look up Quantum Touch Core Transformation Alain Herriot on google books, learn the core transformation meditation which is used as the basis as the CT healing techniques, which are easy. Then you can run feminine energy to bring balance and give you a rest from the breathing. CT the breathing is very slow.
I just wish I could make money at QT. I do incorporate it into my manual work. Which is amazing. Some people don't know where they are after a treatment!! 😉
I'm afraid, Reiki has too many Charlatons for me. I fear that a once beautiful gift has become sullied by, possibly a small number of numbtees.
Thanks for such a wonderfully in depth answer. I've been trying to look up an actual video of a treatment on YouTube to see how the practitioner works but can't seem to find one. Like i said, I'll try and chat to my QT2 colleague
Haven't read through all of this thread but knew someone who did this and apparently has the power to realign bones 😮 As far as I know unlike reiki doesn't require another person to carry out an initiation, so in theory you could learn it from a book I think
Quantum Touch is amazing, I get some great results with.
It is reasonably common to get bones moving particularly in the cervical or thoracic spine. Clients seem to be quite impressed by it too.
Theoretically, yes, you could learn Quantum Touch from the book. The only reason I did the course was to get the certificate for insurance purposes. And yes, that is the great thing about Quantum Touch, you don't need to be attuned. I believe there are too many charlatans within Reiki which gives it a bad name. I also don't like the idea of this symbol thing that Reiki practitioners do or the hierarchical structure that it seems to have. But, each to their own. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.
Quantum Touch is a very powerful modality and I would recommend it to anybody. Also, the good thing about it is you can't really switch it off. This has many benefits and quite nicely carries over into the likes of bodywork etc. So you get not only the physical side of release but also the energetic, which is great!
