I did my first degree Reiki yesterday and it was an amazing experience, once we had been attuned and did self healing, then we did chara balancing, Once that was done we had a chance to do healing on each other.
I started off being the first to heal. I startrd at the crown and I felt fine, then when I moved to the throat and I felt a real heat coming from MY stomach area, I began to feel queasy, I than moved on the the heart chakra and after a minute or so I felt so so hot and really really sick and I had to stop, I felt really shaky it was not a nice feeling.
My teacher said she had not have this happen to any of her students before.
She did some grounding and then while I was having my healing, I had some emotional clearing done, Which made me feel really light and calm.
Has anyone else had such a reaction while they have been healing?
yes i have but now i ground myself and put protection between myself and the recipent.i went hot and thirsty and felt strange at the first healing my reiki master told me to let them do the work not you!so i was using my energy as well! now and then if i feel heat from part of body it to me means more reiki healing needed. once i did reiki on my ears i felt ill with dizziness so had to stop.somtimes it does that when reiking if felt hot and ill it means that part needs more healing, but stop, then do it again later maybe bit at time? some would stay stick with it but i dont not if it makes me feel awful! as time goes on you will know more what to do.
you will learn a lot as time goes on.
well done on doing reiki first degree!

Hi trinabeanbag,
Congratulations on completing your 1st degree!:)
I've not personally experienced this as I always protect myself before carrying outing any kind of healing or therapies
However, I have witnessed something to this effect in class when another student was doing some energy work on a colleague. The first thing that occurred was a very bizarre smell the tutor explained that the student recieving the treatment was releasing negative energy. Unfortunately it appeared that the student treating had not protected herself she too began to feel very nauseous. The events that followed this was student doing the treatment then rushed to the tiolet and was promptly sick. Then the colleague who had been treated from which the energy was being released burst into tears. It turned out that she had been experiencing a lot of emotional problems in the recent months prior to this and in addition to this she had also not been protecting herself while treating clients, this was probably more important for her to do in her circumstances as she works in pallitive care.
They both felt very emotional at the end of this and neither worked together again afterwards. I remember the following week the student that had been treated was very reluctant to work with anyone for fear of causing a similar reaction. I volunteered and we spoke extensively about her protecting herself while she was working and throughout her daily life as she appeared to be very sensitive to her enviroment. This seemed to work wonders for her and I met up with her recently which is now a year down the line and she quite proudly informed me that she still uses these techiques and this has made a considerable difference to her personal and working life.
One of the simplest methods of protecting yourself is to place yourself in a bubble.
However as I've gone off on a tangent it may also have been something more simple baring in mind you had also just been attuned and sometimes the energy can be quite intense so it may have nothing to do with what I've just described . It might also have just been your body trying to adjust to the new energy flowing through it as well.
I hope I haven't scared you with this story it just seemed to ring a bell and it may not be relevant to you but may answer someone else's question.
Love & light,
Sue
Hiya
My Reiki Master was very strong on letting the Reiki flow through you, not trying to make it flow as then you are using your own energies and you are more likely to take on other people's stuff. The protection stuff shouldn't be necessary as Reiki can only do good: there is no negative stuff attached to Reiki.
You may wish to ground yourself after a treatment: just imagine roots growing from you into the Earth, or drink something or eat something.
I get the best results from Reiki when I'm not actively involved in the treatment. It's then that the Reiki flows most freely, without the impediment of my ego. If I'm just observing what the Reiki is doing then things work well.
If I start to feel achey or sick, I say to myself "This has nothing to do with me" and visualise white light filling an egg around me. I've only had to do this once.
Hi Trinabeanbag,
Congratulations on completing your course, and I hope that you're feeling a bit better now.
I'm a teacher and practitioner (I try to avoid using the term 'master') of Usui Reiki Ryoho; I began practicing in 1998 to help with the management of rheumatoid arthritis...the experience was so helpful and positive that I began teaching in 2002. It's difficult for me to comment on your particular reaction as I don't know your teacher personally, and am not familiar with the branch of Reiki that they practice, or the methods they might use. So to jump to any conclusions would unwise on my part...
But I can say this on the subject of protection / grounding, which you might find of some help (or maybe not!). Reiki practitioners seem to be quite split on this issue, some feel that it is necessary and others not so. As for myself, I've never felt the need to employ such methods, not in 10 years, which is a fairly substantial amount of time. I've worked with people in various states of severe or terminal illness, also those with mental health problems, former addicts and prisoners. I've never felt the need to protect myself from the people I work with, nor have I ever felt that I've picked up anything remotely negative from them. Rather than hermetically sealing myself off inside some imaginary bubble, I try to connect with the people I work with on the deepest level possible, and to be entirely focused and attentive to their needs during treatment.
I've never witnessed anything like what you described while teaching, I'm afraid, but once in awhile I've seen a student get a slight headache after tenohira or reiju, or maybe feel the resurgence of a unsettling emotional issue. It's happened to me on occasion as well, when receiving treatments from other practitioners. But in my Reiki tradition, this is not seen as "bad" or "negative", but rather as an important part of the cleansing process which is set in motion each time we work on ourselves. It's generally quite mild, and passes pretty quickly.
I went through quite a bit of physical detox and emotional release when I first started practicing Reiki...initially I was worried, but in a very short time, my reactions calmed down and I felt better than I had in years.
It sounds like your teacher was able to help you get through the uneasy feelings, and after they'd passed you felt a lot calmer and lighter. So it might just be that you're releasing some toxic emotions that might have been stored deep down for a long time. I don't think that this is anything to be afraid of or worried about, but a natural part of the healing process.
It's funny, but I never feel susceptible to other peoples negativity when I work with Reiki. The only time that I feel vulnerable to such things is actually in normal, day to day interactions, when my own energy is low and Ive not been keeping up with my Reiki practice! In my opinion, when ones ki is strong, healthy, balanced and grounded, the body is naturally defended from negativity, and other peoples issues dont affect us so much.
Id recommend that you heed Usui Senseis admonition not to worry, and keep working on yourself daily now that youve completed your course. Drinking extra water also helps the cleansing process, and some people find it helpful to keep a little Reiki diary: its a good way to release any emotional upset that may emerge, and also helps you monitor your physical state. And if you have any more troublesome episodes, do make sure to get in touch with your teacher: thats what they should be there for, to help you and support you in your practice.
Take care, and all the best with everything!

I have had a really awful emotional year to date, and my teacher did think this was my own energy rather than picking it up from the person I was treating, but the emotional cleansing really helped, the only thing is all I have wanted to do since yesterday is sleep!!! I was expecting to be full of energy, but it has been th opposite! My teacher said everything in reiki is normal, as everyone has a comletely unique experience, I was looking forward to being full of energy cos Ive got loads to do!!!!!!:p
Hiya trina
I experienced something similiar. Last year when I was learning reiki, I had homework to do 3 distant healing sessions. I was doing these by imagining I was with the person doing a hands on session. The first two I did I was fine. The last one I started and I felt so sick and light-headed. I thought the other person was rejecting the reiki and it was coming back to me.
When I told my teacher, she said that a huge amount of reiki energy was being channelled, more than what I was used to and this caused my symptoms.
so this could be another reason you had that reaction. Your body wasnt used to the amount of energy being channelled. But don't worry, the more you work with it, the greater your capacity to channel will become 🙂
btw congrats on doing your reiki 1 🙂
Hi Trina,
When I first started using Reiki I would get very hot eventot he extent that my skin would go quite noticeably red. I would even feela little sick but I had always done protection at the beginning.
I found that it was because I was loosing my grounding during the treatment. I was so focussed on the client and letting the reiki energy flow throught thatI was litterally getting carried away with it.
As mentione earlier, simply imagining roots growing from your feet, deep into the ground would help. If I needed to then I would take my hands off the client, collect my thoughts, focus on grounding and continue. It was amazing how my temperatue dropped and my skin returned back to normal colour.
With love and light

Another nice way to keep yourself grounded, both while giving treatments, and in everyday life, is to work on developing strength in your hara, or lower abdomen. In the Japanese view of the human energy system, all strength and vitality eminates from the hara, the seat of our original energy.
You can develop strength in your hara by working on that area during self-treatment; there are also many traditional Japanese Reiki techniques that help with building up one's energy in this area. You can find a great examples of some of these exercises in The Japanese Art of Reiki by Frans and Bronwen Steine. They're simple and easy to perform, and perfectly suitable for beginners.
Hope this helps!

Yes, it happened to me too soon after being attuned.
My theory is the same as The Magicians, that more energy was being chanelled than I was used to.
Fluffystar's suggestion makes sense as some of the excess energy can then drain away theough the 'roots'.
Oh No!
Hi
Congrats on your Reiki 1.
This has now made me very nervous as I am sure I have a phobia about vomitting. I hate loathe and detest the feeling of 'oh no - i think i might be ill'. I am getting nervous now! I am sure no-one likes the feeling but I am due to do my Reiki 1 on Sat and Sun and was looking forward to it but now not so sure!

Your experience will be completely different from mine I can assure you, my tutor has been a Reiki master for many years and she has never seen a reaction like mine!!
I have have had a horrible emotional year and what I experience was my own energy, maybe I shold have waited a few months for my life to calm downm
Go with the flow and enjoy it , I would not have missed it its an amazing experience

Hiya
Don't worry! Nobody I have attuned has been sick afterwards. Everyone reacts differently. Just go with the Reiki!
