I am currently studying to become a reflexoligist and just found out I have to be a LMT, I want to do this very much so now I have to go to school and spend megabucks to become a licensed massage therapist, which isn't something I want to practice but have no choice now. , How many reflexoligists on here have had a similiar situations in the US or elsewhere?

Hi Doobie,

I think it varies from country to country. In the UK there's no such need to be a licenced massage therapist in order to practice reflexology, but then in other european countries there are different laws and restrictions.

Requirements for pre-requisite qualifications vary from State to State and between county to county within those States! I lived in Northern Virginia from 89 - 93. My UK qualification was not recognised (remedial massage) in our residential 'county' but was 6 miles away, in a Alexandria! I was also qualified in reflexology (I trained in 79, before the therapy became bogged down with certification and professional associations) but this was not recognised by any of the local 'counties' so I retrained in Advanced Reflexology at a private massage school in DC (I could have taught the course - I didn't learn anything new or advanced!) - nearly a year of training, and around 300 hours in class - I was then recognised in Alexandria, but our home county still wouldn't give me permission to practice!

I think the best option would be to talk to your reflexology training school, and ask just where you will be able to use the qualification on completion of the course - how much of your coursework is 'home study'? I know that this form of course was not widely accepted when we lived there - not sure how much this has changed in 20 years. You may be OK to look at Spa centres - worth a try!

I've also lived in Belgium - neither my massage nor my US reflexology certification was recognised, so I stuck to treating friends and family in the evenings and weekends and got a day job at a school, to keep me busy!
