Has anyone come across the condition Achalasia and if so have you ever tried to improve it with Reflexology? A client's husband says he has had it for fiveyears, tried chinese medicine (didn't work) and is now taking prescribed drugs to improve it - he says this helps but would like to try a more natural approach to controling/improving the condition. I don't know much about it except that it is generally thought to be viral in origin (killing off nerve endings) but the medical profession seem to be unsure as to its cause. The individual with the condition feels it gets worse in stressfull situations so wonders if reflexology will help. Of course, reflexology helps with managing stress but I wonder if anyone knows more about the condition and has ever tried reflexology??

RE: achalasia and reflexology?

I have never heard of the condition so looked it up in my medical dictionary where it describes achalasia as a raredisorder of the oesophagus, where it develops the inability to relax during the peristaltic effect. Definately worth a try with reflex, but would recommend he keeps taking the medication.

RE: achalasia and reflexology?

I was diagnosed with achalasia a few years ago. After suffering for a long period of time, losing over 20 pounds, trying several medications andgoing thru Boxtox Injections, I finally opted to have a Myotomy (they cut the lower spincter muscle). It was the best thing I ever did. I still suffer with occasional chest pains, and drinking lots of water (and believe it or not, potato chips) helps relieve the pain. Stress does aggravate the condition. Good luck to you.
