I've been on anti depressants since November with a period off them in January as I fell pregnant (miscarried end of Jan) have tried to come off them and really struggled without them, I've heard St Johns wort is good for depression but wondered how effective others had found it. Has anyone else tried both anti depressants and st johns wort?
I'm on the lowest dose I can be and have taken myself down to 1 every 2 days which I'm managing with but I've managed that for a while before but couldnt cope when coming off completely.
All advice appreciated.
Hi
My advice is that you should really visit a medical herbalist for a thorough consultation before taking any herbal remedies. St johns wort in particular is not suitable for people who are on antidepressant medication. It is effective for mild - moderate depression but can interact with medication, so you don't want to be taking them both at the same time. Visit for more info

Hi there
There are many possible causes of depression, many of them physical - and often not investigated by GPs such as food allergies or intolerances, blood sugar imbalances, malabsorption of nutrients with resulting vitamin and mineral imbalances, lack of omega oils (particularly omega-3), plus poor dietary choices and so on.
If you see a BANT registered nutritional therapist they will be able to do a full assessment and give you suitable advice for your particular situation and probably help you to come off the antidepressants. There are several types of antidepressants which have different interactions with herbal remedies, so you need to know what you are doing.
Another possible path to help come off the antidepressants is to find out about EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) which has had some amazing results with depressive illness with very fast relief in some cases. Click .
Wishing you all the best
Hi Angel_Hales. I think we have chatted before. I have been taking anti-depressants on and off over the last two years mostly for anxiety which I struggle with every day. I have tried CB therapy, which asks the question why? and I dont know why. It seemed to be worse after my mum died. I have tried St johns Wort but did not find much benefit, and found it made my asthma worse. St Johns Wort should not be taken at the same time as anti-depressants. I found the most help from the amino acid 5-HTP, available online (cheaper) or at health food stores. It had an effect straight away on anxiety, it also helps weight loss. However its effect became less after three months.
