hey im in a bit of a jumble with a supplement ive just purchased,, i dont know whether i should start taking it or not.. for years this supplement saw palmetto has come up when ive reasearched polycistic ovaries, which i have just been diagnosed with in the last few weeks.. It came up again and again for reducing the levels of testosterone in the body. thus reducing excess hair growth which i suffer with terribly,, every time i wet to buy it the ladys in the health stores, not the same shop, have said its for men only, anyway i went in the other day and the lady asked whether it was for a man so i said yes and bought it.. |Does anyone know anymore about this supplement??
If anyone could shed any light it would be great thanks xx
Hi
Well i am not at all surprised by your confusion with saw palmetto. Both men and women take, but for different reasons.
Men take it for prostrate health, and as a sexual balancer.
However, many women use it for health with the sexual and reproductive health, as well as for there breasts.
I have found a good piece for you to have a look at.
Good luck
I know its an age old remedy for men suffering from hair loss who want to gain it again....
Saw palmetto doesn't reduce testosterone levels.
It blocks testosterone from being converted into dihydrotestosternone, which worsens baldness and factors in prostate enlargement. This is why it's recommended for men.
does it mean that it is no use to me and my symptoms?? No difference yet on the hair growth, moods have 'softened' to put it lightly, my sex drive has gone tho, which i dont like, is this a factor??

Consult your doctor although they are usually clueless about herbs.
I've only researched saw palmetto as it relates to men's health. Some men have reported erectile dysfunction and lower sex drive though.
I think if you have a medically diagnosed condition, rather than wanting a top-up, you'd be best to consult a medical herbalist rather than just buying OTC supplements. That way you'll be getting a remedy that's tailor made for your condition, because it sounds like you're getting unwanted side-effects from this one. Could be you need something else.
You could also look for a maternity reflexologist. PCOS is right up their street.
