I'm currently doing an ITEC Holistic Therapy Diploma and want to practise on a friend who has a disease called Neurfibroma - the symptoms of this diseases are begign tumours which cause small raised bumps on the skin. She assure me that it's fine to massage her and doesn't want to go to the trouble of getting a doctors note to verify.

Has anyone else had any experience with this condition?

Cheers

RE: Neurofibroma - is it ok to massage?

Hiya
My boyf has something like this too (neurofibromyalgia) and he has massages no problem. He can't feel them - the main thing with this is the self consciousness aspect.
I try and avoid the bumps where possible, and to my mind there is always the consideration that you are stimulating the nerve endings - don't know if this is good, or bad in all cases but didn't make a difference in ours.
My college tutor always said it wasn't a problem - and I did my IHM practical on him. I would double check with your tutor though to be double sure.
Hope this helps

thanks that info is very helpful. i'm sure it'll be fine. she's going through a very stressful time, so the massage is going to benefit her from that aspect.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic neurological disorder that can affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves and skin. Tumors, or neurofibromas, grow along the body's nerves or on or underneath the skin. Scientists have classified NF into two distinct types: neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and NF2.

Does this answer your question. Being a masseuse it is important to understand pathologies and body systems.
