I have been sitting wondering this all day. I tried to do a google search on it with no luck.
Does anyone know how many calories you burn giving a 1 hour massage? I know its a physically demanding task, so i would imagine that quite a few would be burned during an hour of pummeling someone.
Any one know the answer to this?
I know its a really random question........but thats just me, i tend to think of irrelevant and random things when i really should be doing some work!!:)

I have a heart rate monitor and have always meant to put it on before giving a massage, but always forget. I'm doing a vigorous 30min back massage later so I'll wear it this evening and let you know. I'm assuming same thing applies as with exercise: that it's all dependent on your frame, current size, level of fitness, etc, as to how many you'll burn.

I do hope its thousands and thousands of calories as I can only justify eating like a horse because I do 4/5 hours of deep tissue massagea day.

As for how many calories you burn, Red Bess is right.
I'm assuming same thing applies as with exercise: that it's all dependent on your frame, current size, level of fitness, etc, as to how many you'll burn.
The metabolism is a very complex thing. In addition to all the factors Red Bess mentioned above, it also depends on your calorie intake, when you ate your last mealand your level of activity.
Oh, and how vigourously you massage:D

Hi all,
I must be the only sad one here cos' I wore my heart rate monitor for a full clinic day ( 7 hours 5 treatments), for a remedial massage it ranged from 275-365 cals, however I did 2 back to back sports massages and used 1100 in 2 hours, during the day in total i used just under 3000, needless to say I slept well that night. incidently i am 6 foot 5 and sixteen stone so use more than a slip of a therapist.
