Seriously though, most of the times its so innocent and you just have to feel sorry for the guys it happens to.....i have seen far too many 'looks of horror' on clients faces when its happened! I also remember the first time it happened andit was [sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif]

I had togiggle at your "experience". It happens often and is mostly met with embarrassment. However, on occasions it is a prelude to asking for "special treatments"....one of my clients came straight out with it and asked didif I did extras, I feigned stupidity and told him that"I could probably rustle you up a cheese sandwich". He declined my generous offer!

By the way, I start a client off on their back - you spend much more time on the back of the body and then it's a much shorter time they are face-up.

As I mentioned on that thread, personally I definitely prefer beginning with the client face up: it makes it easier to check whether the pressure is appropriate for the client.

My one and only experience of 'that problem' was after a reiki treatment when my client announced he had an erection! I sat on the sofa with the table between us and proceeded with an air of 'that's nice for you dear...' :D:D

One of my first reiki treatments involved working on a very nice young man who had the treatment room boiling hot and appeared stripped to the waist because that was the way his girlfriend gave reiki...[sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif] Let's just say I got a bit hot under the collar for more than the obvious reasons... sigh... he was such a nice young man... gave me info on Ascension work too!

I think that this thread really needs to distinguish between two very different situations:

1) cases where the client is actually looking for a sexual service (as suggested by the heading of the thread, and referred to in Helen’s post); and
2) cases where the client has an involuntary erection as a response to the massage.

As far as the second situation is concerned, personally I would agree with the advice which Paul Crick gave to a novice therapist on the earlier ‘men and massage’ thread:

“Erections can happen during a massage though they are not the norm, some people appear havelittle self-controlbut your massage techniques might be a little too gentle, which turns the massage into a sensual one. I would suggest you increase the pressure you are applying and make sure you have good contact with the skin, it is hard to do any serious damage so use your body weight by leaning into your arms “

PS In response to Helen – I realised what you meant, but we will have to agree to differas towhich sequence is preferable ! And if food qualifies as ‘extras’, I think that the food which AlanofDale offers (see his earlier thread “clients with roaming hands”) sounds much more appetising than a cheese sandwich !

i wouldn't know what to do if that ever happens to me because I giggle over the smallest thing so I'd be laughing for days and wouldnt be able to tell anyone what happened. I'm not a massager and I can't do reiki but on my work expieriance when I was working at marks and spencers an older woman came over to me asking for a bra and obviously I didnt know what type she wanted and where they were and to my horror she lifted her top up infront of her friend and said one like this. Luckily the woman who was looking after me was near saw what was happening andescorted her away from me and into the section that had the bra she wanted I've been scarred ever since. Not much compared to yours but its the only thing thats ever happened to me

You should have seen the firestorm Alan of Dale set off on bodyworkonline.com forums. The problem is, this client did nothing wrong, and the assumption that men can control when they get aroused is completely wrong. First of all, many men may be taking Viagra, Cialis, etc...which can have lasting effects for several days. One time I went to a massage with a woman who I hadn't been to, and I took off my clothes, laid down, and suddenly got aroused for no stinking reason! Perhaps the temperature changeand the heating pad I was on. I wasn't sitting there fantasizing or anything, and the blanket was tucked pretty tightly, so it became obvious, I am afraid. I desperately was trying to get rid of it before she came in the room, but that probablymade things worse! Obviously, with the sheet being thin and it tucked so tightly, I think shenoticed it, because she started firing questions at me about my family, which she doesn't do normally. 5 minutes it was gone, and the massage as a whole went totally normal. I just hope I don't get labeled now because of one incident.

Unless the client does something abnormal, I don't think the therapist should ever assume anything just because a guy gets aroused at some point during a massage. You can't see into the client's mind, so it is dangerous to pretend that you can.

It doesn't take much to get the other board stired up. Like I said Before, Europe has sent all of its religious nuts from the 15th Century on to North America.

I really like being apart of these two boards. I think it give me a better perpestive on how people do things. And I have learned alot from both boards. I just hope that you don't mind a crazy american poping in every once in a while.

This type of situation was discussed when I was in massage school many years ago. Apparently, it's very common for men to get an erection while being massaged. Hell, some men can get an erection if the wind blows, so it's nothing to get alarmed about. And I certainly wouldn't take it as any type of sexual come-on or request for more than a therapeutic massage. It can be quite embarrassing for most men ... and the massage therapists too! Although, a personal trainer had a funny response once for that type of situation. His client was a massage therapist and the two of them were discussing how embarrassing it is when male clients get erections. The personal trainer told his client that she should just say, "Put that thing away until you get home!" I about fell over laughing (I was on the treadmill at the time)!!

Hi AlanofDale, I found this forum from a post of yours on the bodyworkonline forum. Just wanted to say thanks 'cuz that's how I found this forum, and it seems really great so far.
When I was in school, we talked about this sort of thing, that an erection happening during a massage can just happen for no reason. There's no reason to worry about it, unless they try other stuff as well to get 'extras'.Luckily, no onehas asked me forextras yet, but if they do, I'm going to try the cheese sandwich idea!

Just to put a different slant on things.....

I, along with my family and friends, went to a Turkish Bath (in Turkey) some years ago and a massage was included as part of the treatment.I was a little alarmed after my massage to find that the masseur, who was wearing what amounted to a teatowel, had a very obvious erection - it caused some hilarity amongst the family and friends but he didn't seem fazed at all!
