I have just bought some Basalt stones from a supplier at the Complementary & Healthcare Expo at ExCel this weekend. I paid £85 for 45 stones which included Large, Medium, Small and toe stones. I took a chance and I pleased with what I have. If I want to add special shaped ones I will buy them separately. I now need the marble or marine cold stones. The question is: has anybody frozen or made the Basalt stone really cold? I ask this because I will mostly be doing massage "incorporating" stones and therefore I wont need to use all of my stones as hot. If you can't, then I would appreciate any help in getting marble stone a bit cheaper, otherwise I will just order whatever I can. Also, does anybody else just do full body or facial massage "incorporating" stones. I have trained in LaStone Therapy and enjoyed it very much but I know my clients will prefer an "incorporation" of stones with massage rather than the treatment. xxxx
RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
Hi Susie ,
I do not freeze my basalt stones, but I do put them into a cold bag with a ice-pack for a coupke of hours prior to a Massage. They are not directly in contact with the ice-pack, but do get very cold. I only do this with the very small toe size stones that I sue at the end of the treatment for face and eyes.
I also have found, following feedback from my husband, that although he loved the relaxation element of the full Stones Massage, he missed the feeling of having had a good work on! To this end, I often integrate the two. I use the stones for the majority of the treatment, but might leave them to one side whilst I work with my hands more on specific muscles, if the client has requested this.
As I am just introducing the Stones to my clients, I find that always having them ready to show to people is helping. They all love to hold a heated stone, and it gives me a chance to talk about the treatment.
It can be difficult to persuade people to fork out the extra cost on something that they do not know very much about!!

RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
Thanks Karen, I think I'll start with the cold basalt on the face as this was one of the areas I particularly enjoyed. At least it will give me a chance to have a practise before getting any marble stones. I also found that putting my basalt stones in a slow cooker for 20 minutes and then turning it off (I have a thermometer to check temp.) the stones are just right for a full treatment. I dont have a regular stream of clients throughout the day, so this is sufficient for my needs. Boy the measures we have to go to just to get up and running.
Lots of love xxxx
RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
I actually find I can get deeper with the stones - especially around the scapula and top of the shoulders and on the legs for those who are really into sport.
Try using the "piezoelectric" technique - once one of the smaller basalt stones has cooled slightly - enough for it to be moved slowly - hold it over the knotted muscle. Tap it firmly with another basalt stone for about 30 seconds moving it very slowly over the affected area . This will now be quite pink . "Flush" this area with a frozen stone by again moving it slowly over the worked area -
This is so effective, and much kinder on your thumbs , but don't try it with marble - they will break!!
RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
Thanks for that, Janey - I will definitely give this a go.
Did any of you see the article in the Daily Mail on monday, which was about stars and their favourite treatments - one of them was Hot Stone Therapy. I will be cutting this out and putting it on the notice board at the clinic!

RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
This site is very exciting, it is great to see so many of you talking about the possibilities that stones can offer you in body work.
Basalt stones can be put in the freezer, no worries! They do better hot, but will work cold as well.
Here at LaStone we have found that the basalt stones hold the heat longer then any other stone on our planet.
That stones such as marble, jade, sardonyx, onyx, quartz, all hold the cold longer then that of a basalt stone.
Many of the dark jade stones and black marble stones will also hold the heat for long periods.
We do not recommend that you put the marble, jade, sardonyx, onyx, quartz stones in the freezer; but cool them by placing them in the refrigerator or on ice.
Keep experimenting, the ways in which you can incorporate stones into your practice is endless and will always support your health as long as you are mindful of your body mechanics.
Enjoy the ride,

Why shouldn't anyone share techniques?[sm=scratchchin.gif]
RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
hiya
good question, we had to sign a contract that said we could not disclose the techniques , i suppose it is so that they are not ripped off, like many other therapies,

I think it is a natural thing to share techniques, seems a bit precious to keep things to your self like that. We can all benefit from being supportive of each other.
RE: Can you freeze Basalt stones?
I too feel that we should be able to share 'good practice' and, as a new member, find the information in these forums invaluable . I have been a practicing therapist/lecturer for years and I try never to miss an opportunity to learn!
