I went to a presentation day of a very highly regarded acupuncture college today. I was very much looking forward to it. I really didnt like it, I didnt get a warm glow and could not see myself studying there. I was really taken aback by how I felt as I expected to really like it.
Im just worried that I wont get the right vibe from any college I look at (I suppose in that case now isnt the time for me to study TCM) I have waited may years to persue this course and its got me worried. Has anyone else felt like this at a college they were expecting to like? and if so did they find one that really suited them?
Thank you:)
Well, on the bright side is that you realized before starting and didn't waste time and money... it must be very disappointing though...
The same happened to me... I went to the open day of this famous college and went away with the feeling that the only thing they were really good at was marketing.
I have just finished a Bsc in acupuncture...and at times I was a bit fed up of the setting...and I heard about other people complaining about other places for different reasons....but I never, for once, stopped loving Chinese medicine and that got me through.
So...the place is important and trust your instinct...but if you really want to do Chinese medicine..keep looking!!!
Hi, this happens, if you dont get a good feel, then the college is not for you, but their are other colleges out their too, so you may feel differently towards them. Open days can be helpful in many ways, it gives you a chance to get the feel and ask questions. May be worth asking acupuncturists in your area where they did their course, this may be helpful in your quest too.
Dont give up, keep looking, and i am sure you will find a college that suits you soon.

I am so interested in the principles of TCM it exites and fascinates me. Im reading "the web that has no weaver" I love what Im reading (even if as yet it doesnt make sense, its such a different way of thinking, to western ideas, I want to know more and want to understand) I agree with you ju79, the marketing was spot on, faultless, but I didnt feel it. Im off to see Middlesex in a week or two s Im hoping that i get the good vibe im looking for. I supose its best to trust your instincts.
Sometimes is not about the place, the 4 walls you will be in, the presentation days....
3 years ago I embarked on this journey and I am now on my final year, and finally treating people as part of my clinical experience....looking back I felt the same as you but the college I am at (London) was and is the best on the market in terms of qualification and recognition, and regardless to that initial vibes ( They did went on for a few months! ) I have had amazing teachers, and even more now in clinical practice....
Unfortunately nowadays is all about business and marketing, but is the lecturers, their experience, passion and knowledge that is making us great practitioners....
Hope this helps!
