This, I just saw, is on tonight, Sept 11th, Channel 4, 11.05 p.m. Apparently Vegas used to be a Christian, possibly evangelical. So I've read nothing on what to expect, but I'd imagine it's going to be mildly informative but, given Vegas, hopefully a bit of fun as well. 🙂
It's the first of three episodes of "The Beginner's Guide" so I'm assuming the others will be on two other major faiths.

Yes! Believe it or not. I just read a paragraph on it, and he may not be playing it for laughs at all. He was raised a Catholic it seems (so evangelism in the USA will be pretty new to him anyway).
(I wonder what he'll use as communion and incence? Johhny Walker's and a cigar?)

Me too!, I used love his little quips about Christianity and religion in "Ideal".
And particualry loved the whole on going saga with the Born again Christian storyline that ran for a while.
Cracked me up.:)
(I think he was training to be priest in his early life wasn't he?)
So what did you think of it then?
I felt sad for Mr Vegas...that programmed summed it up for me, these kind of groups seek out peoples weak points, loneliness, addiction, poverty, grief ect then creep in like a disease, pulling on all insecurities & promising special salvation from a spiteful god....ooooppps sorry:(

Hi Amy,
Well it was hardly a guide and certainly not what I expected.
Anyway, I found it interesting from JV's point of view in terms of his own questions, his early relationship with the Catholic faith and it's dynamic with his father; and how the thoughts ran through his head while listed from one side to the other in his desire to please himslef, please god and or please the people - even recognising that he often tells himself lies in order to do what he wants.
P.S. I liked that preacher he spent time talking to BTW (the one Johnny said he'd like to get in the same room as his father - a statement that could be taken one of two ways eh?:))
Hi Roger, i did think it would be a little bit more like when Keith Allen met the Baptists, although I'm glad it wasn't..although a little bit funnier it doesn't paint a balanced picture I don't think...JV was a true attempt to get to know the Evangelical religion rather then a bit of a p*** take, I did feel 'sad' for him though,

Having started the thread, and me being usually a night owl, I was reeling with tiredness by about 10 p.m. I switched it on and then the rest was a haze between nodding off and getting 60 second bits when I roused. Just remember that it wasn't a p*** take? But he was a bit of a sad character himself? Drinking scotch (as I wrote!) and before going to investigate taking time out to see strippers? The rest is a haze through sleep - I wa relatively alert just for the guy who took him on a geology walk, and found the Bible was simpler and liked questions to be all answered?
