Butter Festival 9th March

The annual Butter Festival , is held on this day in Tibet by the Buddhist monks, it illustrates their belief that the world is transient -- that only the spirit is eternal. Preparing for this festival takes months of time consuming work as dye is mixed with iced butter to create the effigies, some of which are two stories high.

When the day of the festival arrives, the statues are mounted on platformes with lanterns. Near dusk the statues are paraded through the streets as sacred chants are recited. After the procession the statues are taken to the river and tossed upon the water to melt away.

when the wind,
water and you
are quite
still.

RE: Butter Festival 9th March

I remember watching a program about monks and a festival they celebrate...can't remember which one, but what they did was sort of along those lines. They spent months preparing a huge detailed mandola out of colored sand. They never stopped working on it, they just took shifts until it was done. The detail of the design was stunning, and took so long to make...and to conclude the ceremony, they destroyed it! At first it seems a waste--but then you think about it and you are reminded of the imperminence of life, and that destruction is what preceeds creation in our natural cycle.
Thanks for sharing, I look forward to tomorrows enlightening view!
