Hi Vicki,

We went to Tulum last year and had a fabulous time. There were so many activities in the hotel, that we found it hard to drag ourselves away. We quite enjoyed staying round the hotel and just snorkelling off the beach.

We went to Xel Ha, one of the eco parks there, and that was wonderful, I really would recomend it. We bought a ticket from our tour rep that included hire of towels, snorkelling equiptment, locker hire and all your food and drink while you are in there, ice creams and snacks too. It seemed quite expensive, but was worth every penny. We had a guide, who picked us up from the hotel, and he was with us in the park, in the price of the ticket, who was just fantastic. He showed us all around, took us to lunch before the rush, and showed us hidden gems, which we just wouldn't have found on our own. He left us to have time on our own too!

We were going to go to Chichen Itza, which was highly recommended, but my son was ill that day. Cozumel was somewhere else we wanted to visit for a day too, but it wasn't taking visitors after the hurricane.

I would recommend looking at the Trip Advisor website - you can get reviews about just about anything. We found that useful when planning trips or places to visit. People also give you good advice and tips too. I always look there, where ever I am going.

The local bus service is excellent, and a good way of getting around, and very cheap. We used it to visit different places up and down the coast. Car hire wasn't recommended, and it is the only holiday we have been on and not hired a car.

You will have a fabulous time.

With love
Jacquie

We went to Playacar two years ago for our silver wedding aniiversary.
We stayed at the Riu Tequila Hotel which was lovely. The beach is glorious with water sports available.
We went on the trip to Chichen Itza and whilst it is a long journey, 3 hours each way, it was well worth it.
The wildlife is interesting to say the least. We had a large iguana wandering the pool area, the moths are the size of saucers and we saw a red/white/black stripe snake one day which a local chopped in half because it was a very poisonous coral cobra. After seeing that I made hubby check under the bed every night.
One thing I noticed was that mexicans are all very short.I am only 5' 1" and I felt like a giant.
Take stacks of mossie repellant. We went in June and I got eaten alive.

One of the things I didn't like was that customs/passport control is very slow.We queued for an hour or more and they search most cases which takes ages. You will be expected to tip for everything. I used the Ladies at the airport and an elderly lady handed me a paper towel and then expected a pound tip.You will be expected to pay a pound to use a luggage trolley as well.
Going home it is just as slow and you must make sure you have some money for the exit tax.You have to pay to leave the country, I think it was about £20 per person but not sure. Some people got caught out on this and had to search for a cash machine.

I'm sure you will enjoy your trip, we did, it is such an interesting place to visit.

i have now returned from my mexican holiday and can recommend it!

we went for 2 weeks and did so much i am exhausted.

some of the best bits were:

wild howler monkeys in the hotel grounds (they move between the forest and the hotels) they slept just outside our room on the tree. literally 3 feet away! brilliant

snorkeling with wild turtles brilliant, so close u could touch them (but we didnt)

having wild dolphins swimming by our small fishing boat for about 15 mins!

being in the forests

snorkling in cenotes.

ooh and yes carebare, the mexicans are really short arent they!!!! the maya are very short as well, perhaps even shorter!
