RE: Majorca- Mosquitos, please help!
One of my clients lives in Majorca for 5 months of the year. and rarely gets bitten. Yes, there can be mosquitos around, but she makes sure that she wears a bug-repellent cream, and has anti-bug screens in her house windows. Never heard of the malaria-carrying species in the Med - mainly confined to sub-continent Asia, Africa & South America.
The ruddy things treat me like a dinner plate if I go out in the garden - they share me with the midges - I live in Scotland - and yes, I do use anti-bug cream. Best relief from bites (for me) is neat Tea Tree oil or Tiger Balm.
We're going to Majorca in September for 2 weeks too. We went to Menorca (island to the right of Majorca) at the same time last year and there were no issues at all with Mosquitos.
I noticed in my local health shop today some promotional leaflets on the counter for natural insect repellent patches and with this thread in mind, made some enquiries. The leaflet had no contact details on it (odd - perhaps they forgot!), but the shop owner gave me the website from the product packaging:

They seem to make a patch for pretty much everything

Take Garlic capsules for a couple of weeks before you go out there and continue whilst on holiday. Mosquitos hate garlic. It really does work and you can take the odourless ones so that your human friends aren't repelled as well!
I have been to Majorca and menorca several times and have never had any problems with Mossies and I am one of those people who attracts biting insects. So annoying when hubby doesn't get bitten but I get eaten alive.
If you are worried you could take some mossie spray to use in the evenings just in case.
I have had problems with them in other parts of the world but never in the mediterranean.
Hi Donna,
I agree with gilliebean. Those mossies will defintiely go lookin' for someone less garlicky!!
Love Cathy x

I've tried STRONG mozzie spray and they still bite me - and leave everyone else alone. Just shows how sweet I must be :FIFangel::FIFangel::FIFangel::FIFangel:
We always spray on Avon's `Skin so soft`. This is a moisturising lotion for the skin but lots of people including us swear by it. I suppose it is chemical based like the insect repellants but I think it is kinder on the skin as some insect repellants warn against continuous use.
We don't sit in the garden of an evening without it. It also smells quite pleasant.

Well I've tried that. Live on Isle of Wight - have been gardening for about half an hour and have got 4 of the biggest bites you've ever seen - and it appears that they like me more than they dislike Avon's `Skin so soft. Looks like I'll have to get some garlic. Oh, and don't they itch:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Well perhaps it's because you don't live on the mainland and have special mozzies.
Shame because I love the Isle of Wight, haven't been for years though must get there sometime.
I have some of that skin so soft ready for a trip to india.in Nov..looks like I better get some garlic cpasules too, if they dont work I can always throw the capsules at the mosquitoes?

I've just come back from Corfu and found that a pump spray of insect repellant was handy to carry around at night time. We all sprayed our ankles and any other exposed skin.
son got no bites
hub got about 6
I got none!
Mossie's seem to like to eat me for breakfast, dinner and evening meal.
We went to Alcudia in Majorca a couple of years ago and there were loads of them, i had to keep spraying myself with repellent all through the day, the night before we were due to come home I was upp all night with my legs in a cold bath because the bites were so itchy and hot.
By the time we got to airport at home, my legs and feet were so swollen, in the end I had to take out the laces in my trainers so my feet could breathe.
My first visit when we got home was to the A&E, they told me I had a bad reaction to the bites, I came home with antibiotics and cream.
Apparently youre either a repellant or an attractant to mossies, depending on your sweat/scent.
Try taking a vitamin B2 supplement with the garlic, or there's a homoeopathic anti-mos remedy which for the life of me I can't remember!! If you wanted to go that route I'm sure somebody here will know, or you could ring either Ainsworths or Freemans Chemist for help, both of which are online
Before you book in majorca go to the holidays uncovered web site.
We found the hotel we were going to book was plagued with them as it was near a lake.:(
We saw some good write ups for cala Dor and had a great time .......didnt take any cream or repelant (what chemicals are in those cans !).................. not a single bite ....... .
Have yourself a great time.;)
Regards steve
If you are really worried try something like this Bens 100. It's 95% deet so it's about as strong as you can get. They also do natural insect repellents too if you prefer not to use chemicals:

Ohhh Daisychain, it was the wasps when i went to Corfu years ago, i got stung, you couldnt eat your lunch in peace, they used to drive me mad, the mossie bites are annoying too, when i went to the Dominican last year i got bit a couple of times, i hadnt taken any repelent, but i put toothpaste on to stop the itching, it worked and they soon disappeared.
Avon Skin So Soft - the best one seems to be the dry skin formula.
I read about the vitmain B complex too, so have begun to take those already in prep for my trip to see tigers in india next month..must add garlic capsules to my list of things to buy.
I did read that marmite is helpful too but dont fancy eating that every day of my adventure....

I keep an aloe vera plant on my kitchen window sill and if I get bitten in the garden I break off a small piece of the plant and rub the sap on the area.It really helps soothe the itch.
Also good if you scald yourself when cooking.
We're off to the Canaries next month and I shall be taking the mossie spray as a precaution.
Hi, I've just come back from a week in Majorca (loved it!) and not a mozzie to be seen, even though the rainy season was just starting. Then, maybe it's because I take my marmite with me to eat with toast every morning!
Love
mozzie problem solved!
