Hi,
I've had a rough few months and now feel desperately in need of a holiday. I'd like to go somewhere different to my usual holiday spot in the Canaries, I don't usually use travel agents but book everything direct. But with my emotional state right now I thought I'd go to the travel agents and I just feel overwhelmed with the choice. I thought I'd get some guidance but the travel agents just ask "so where would you like to go - maybe pick 3 or 4 places" in that same vacant tone of voice used by the girl who washes your hair at the hairdressers asking "have you booked you holiday yet?" or "are you going somewhere nice tonight?". When I say I'm not sure, they just pile me up with brochures and say "come back when you have a clearer idea of what you want".

I'd like a relaxing holiday by the sea; somewhere that's not packed with British tourists and their families; somewhere where there are things to do and see but you don't feel pressured to do a load of sightseeing - you know, go to Paris and you must visit this tick list of places otherwise you haven't really seen it; ideally I'd prefer not to drive but I'm happy to use public transport and taxis. But this isn't enough for a travel agent to make suggestions apparently.

So I wondered - have any HPers been somewhere that ticks all the above boxes that they'd be happy to recommend?

Your thoughts would be sooooo welcome!
With love,
Amber

RE: Holiday help needed!

How about the South of France, or how about staying in this country and go to Cornwall, Wales or Scotland.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Amber

I know you are not as active as you would like right now but these people send me the odd brochure and I do get inspired [link= http://www.adventurecompany.co.uk/late-availability.aspx ]http://www.adventurecompany.co.uk/late-availability.aspx[/link]I have linked to their late availablities.. and not everything is too active.

I know it may not seem as relaxing as you might be thinking but....

Egypt came into my mind when I read your post, but not having been there myself I cannot personally recommend it..

Let us know what you decide on..

Hi Amba,
I really do feel for you, My storie is a little different to yours but it worked a treat for us, so here go's.
We have always used an Travel agent for the last 15 yrs or so but in 2005 because of my husbands bad health we decided to try the internet for our next Vacation and found many villas and wonderfull Holiday homes that was being rented out by the Owner but still had no idea where to go, on some of the sites we found they even gave you different ideas with lots of pictures, and where so much cheaper than booking through an Travel agent, we have now done this three times and been so very happy. Maybe this can help you, and would like to wish you all the luck in the world.
ps. the last website we used for our holiday was there are many out there but found these to be very helpfull.
Once again good luck.

RE: Holiday help needed!

Hi Amber,

I have recently returned from staying at the Intercontinental Hotel in Taba Heights, Egypt (as I needed to get away after a bad few months).

I just wanted somewhere warmwhere I could sit on the beachto meditate and read. It was just what I needed.

Be warned though, apart from snorkling, swimming etc, there isn't too much to do locally (there are trips further afield though). But I was too busy relaxing to get bored 😀

There are four hotels spread out along the beach, but they are not full of Brits - a mix of holiday makers from Europe, Jordan etc

Have a look at:-

I hope this helps

Bon Voyage!

RE: Holiday help needed!

Thank you all for your lovely replies, I thought it only fair to let you know what we decided in the end! My lovely partner took over finding the perfect place, selecting things to show me, and not getting niggled when I kept coming back from town with even more brochures, feeling even more clueless!

We were both really attracted to Egypt, specifically the Red Sea Riviera - I could be even more specific but can't quite remember the name of the resort right now! The only thing that put us off was the temperature - a friend of a friend has just come back and the temperatures were regularly 37-38C, which is what it says temperatures will be in July! So we decided that we'll save that one for February next year when it is cooler - my partner's birthday is on February 29th, so we always try to have a nice holiday over his birthday since it's only once every 4 years! 😀

Then purely by chance (and we all know there is no such thing as coincidence!) my other half found the ideal holiday for us right now - it's in a quiet part of Turkey, relatively unspoilt, the hotelis on a river with a mountain backdrop, nestling in a forest of pine and eucalyptus. The walk to the beach and village is 10-15 minutes along the river and it all looks very tranquil. Perfect for just chilling, reading, relaxing, meditating - and the village/small town has some good bars and restaurants for when we decide to venture from the hotel's grounds.

Neither of us has been to Turkey, so it's somewhere new to explore together.

So, now to find out what jabs we need! [:'(]

With love,
Amber

Hi Amber

That sounds like the perfect holiday!!!

My dad went to Turkey 2 years ago ~ and I know he picked it partly because he didn't need any jabs (phobia of needles)!!!
