(ah! just to beat you Sunanda in the traveling Forum!)

was wondering if anyone likes to visit Prehistory/ancient sites on holidays, or even as day breaks. Or am I the only sad geek here?

My favourite ones on my limited traveling have been:
- Scotland's standing stones (Machra Moors, Callanish), also cairns and the strange womb-like structures (what s the name again?) with a corridor then a circular room in the open air.
- A place in Cornwall called Zenor.

My objectives are to visit Crete's Minoan temples, Menorca and Malta's temples/stone strucures. Im lucky with these ones, they re places Id go to for a swim in the azur seas and sun therapy!
And Catal Huyuk, a neolithic village where many goddess statues were found...

Korean temples would be fantastic too but that s another story.

Not sad at all, Fadette. I totally agree with you that these ancient sites are both magical and intriguing. I always make a point of visiting any ancient places that I can. I envy you your acquaintance with so many Scottish sites; I've mainly visited some in England (the obvious ones of Stonehenge and Avebury many times) but I was also bowled over by some of the tombs in Ireland, Newgrange for example. In Mallorca once I was taken to a very weird and old underground dwelling (exactly like a womb) but I don't remember what it was called. Barafundle has some wonderful photos of ancient places in Wales. Perhaps if we ask him nicely he'll put a picture or two on here.

Oooooohhhh! Can I come too pleeeeease Fadette??? :D:D I'd just love to visit all the sites you mention - only been there on paper. Trouble is many sites are in hot places and I have great difficulty with heat (don't sweat!) - so it'd have to be in winter. Can't persuade hubby to have any holidays :(.

Just been reading about the Maltese remains (along with many other world sites) in Graham Hancock's Underworld, Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age - fascinating!

I shall have to go on my travels before I get too decrepit 😉

Been to several sites in Menorca, don't know what it is about the island but just can't keep away from it. Think we've visited 7 times so far and stayed all over the island, although I like to stay in Cala N Forcat because my friend has a shop there. Well worth hiring a car you can't get lost for long because the road either ends up on the coast or on the main road that run's nearly the whole length of the island.

If you like loud music, bingo, long beaches, kiss me quick hats then Menorca isn't for you, it's fairly quiet and low key island. And I love it there and I want to be there .......... I'm home sick :012:

There's just a spiritual feeling about the place that takes hold of me when I'm on holiday that I can't feel when anywhere else.

Hello, I love visiting ancient places. I haven't been to Callanish yet, but on my to do list as well as Avebury, have you been there?

I haven't been to any abroad, well ampitheatres in Turkey. In England visited Arbor Low, Nine Ladies many times, also Long Meg, Gors Fawr, Nine Stone Close(Grey Ladies), Doll Tor, Castle Rigg. I think it's fascinating!

A good site for ancient places information is (not just stone circles):

and Julian Copes Modern Antiquarian(the book called this is excellent and full of information) website.

thanks all, we re not alone!

ahah Caroline I was laughing at your reply!! well when I go next on my Indiana Jones adventure I shall post on this forum to let you know! (hey why dont HP members get together to organize some trip?)

Cis, Menorca sounds beautiful, I really want to go.

I forgot to mention I also visited prehistory sanctuaries in France such as the Gargas and the Niaux caves in the pyrennees and some other Dordogne caves with carvings or paintings in them. Gargas is THE sanctuary, I cant even start to describe it, and when I think of modern people who wouldnt suspect a thing about how deeply spiritual people were more than 20 000 years ago.: the painted hands, the giant vagina, the animals......a famous Goddess statue was found in that pyrenees region dating from 25 000 before present.

thanx Heghog for the sites, will have a look.
