Beaches on the Isle of Wight last week were not deserted but surprisingly quiet once you'd walked a bit away from the car parks 🙂

Holkham Beach - used in the last scene of the film Shakespeare in Love.

Holkham Beach - I agree. The loveliest beach in the UK in my opinion.

Totally agree too! It would take you about 2 1/2 - 3 hours from London. Probably better to stay the night!

If you need somewhere to stay - Burnham Market is nearby and that's lovely. Also Holkham Hall just a walk away from the beach is worth a visit. Most of it is not roped off like usual stately homes - so you can touch everything. They even have a lovely grand piano in the entrance hall, which you can play if you are proficient!

I think you re after (or were after, I just noticed the date of your first post!) a romentic rugged wild coast and Scotland IS just that.

But in England there is some Celtic landscape too, I just love Cornwall. Ok, it s quite far from London and wont do for just one day. I went to the very tip of the end of the conwall peninsula, somewhere there was (or the northen side) a lighthouse, huge orangey cliffs, blue sea and seals making horrible wet snoring noise! briliant! Pendeen I think is the name.

how about this (dont know exactly where it is in Cornwall but Ive seen this kind of landscape on the coast around Falmouth):
