Hi, I would like to take a sports massage course but wondering which course/qualification/college would suit me best.

I qualified many years ago in massage/aromatherapy and worked as an aromatherapist for a couple of years. I then went in a different career direction although I continued to massage a little on the side. Last year I took an advanced massage course at the City Lit which was great but I would have liked more time spent on each new technique. I don't want to specialise in working with athletes specifically but would really like to feel confident assessing and dealing with common injuries (RSI/rotator cuff/shin splints/tendon/ligament injuries that kind of thing) in the general population including people who are active and sporty. I would quite like to work within osteopathic/chiropractors clinic.

I've checked out a few courses and associations - SMA, APNT. Should I just forget about ITEC courses or does it depend on the college/tutor? St Mary's Twickenham offers ITEC and I've heard thats a great place. Is anyone familiar with The Quantum Meta or London Massage Company courses - both are affiliated to APNT. They seem more comprehensive than ITEC, are they as good as SMA affiliated courses? The APNT doesn't get mentioned much, everyone seems to focus on The SMA. Cost is obviously a factor but i want a course thats going to prepare me properly. I live in London.

Thanks in advance. 😉

Hi SmallPanda,

If you want quality training and to be taken seriously then don't consider ITEC. I've done some workshops with both Jane Johnson of the London Massage Company and Quantum Metta and can recommend both very highly. Jane Johnson is a highly qualified practitioner and tutor, if it was up to me Jane would win out every time.

Cheers, Sue
