Here are some question you may be asked that promote the image of and support hygiene in the Workplace. I am not saying the answers given are correct, or are the only answers but they are the ones I gave and they are only given as a guide.
a) What is it important to maintain standards of hygiene and what legislation should be adhered to?
It is important to maintain standards of hygiene because it stops cross infection. You will keep you clients, and you will not be prosecuted or be closed down. The legislation that should be adhered to are:-
H health & Safety at work act 1974
Health & Safety (first aid) regulations
COSHH
Industry codes of practice for hygiene in salons and Clinics
The industry code of ethics
b) What are the principles for avoiding cross-infection?
The principles for avoiding cross-infection are to wash hands often (before and after treating a client) and to cover all open cuts, etc. To keep your work area clean and to wear a clean uniform. Not to treat/touch clients or parts of clients that are have an infectious disease.
c) What legislation and regulations cover hygiene in the workplace?
Local by-lays may contain regulations
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
COSHH
Workplace Health and Safety and Welfare Regulations
Environmental Protection Act controlled waste regulations and special waste regulations
d) How do you explain need for hygiene precautions to clients?
I would explain that I have to take hygiene precautions by law and to protect them and myself from catching an infection disease.
e) Give examples of hygiene procedures you take as part of your work.
Wash before and after giving treatments and after going to the toilet. Making sure that my work area is clean and tidy. That any cuts I have are covered, my uniform is clean and my hair is away from my face.
f) How do you ensure that the workplace always appears hygienic?
I would ensure that the workplace was clean and tidy before my first client arrived and would clean and tidy after each client.
g) What is a hygienic method of disposing of treatment waste?
General waste can be disposed of with normal everyday waste. Sharps should be placed carefully in sharps box and disposed of carefully. Any waste that contains bodily waste should be placed carefully in a yellow bag/box and then disposed of as laid down by local government bylaws.
h) Why are punctuality and professional appearance important?
If you are not punctual you will not keep your clients, this will also lose you time and money. If your appearance is untidy and dirty you will give an unprofessional appearance. Again you will lose your clients and in both cases you could end in you closing down.
i) What is the correct way to behave when dealing with clients? Include dress, personal hygiene and attitude in your answer.
I would be dressed in a clean uniform and would be clean and tidy. The only jewerly I would wear is a wedding ring, I would not wear any strong perfumes and my nails would be short and clean. I would be professional and treat my clients how I would like to be treated myself.

Hi Jennifer
I did VR74 a couple of years ago, and I still look out for this thread.
I think the point behind this activity is this. If you're talking to a client, and they tell you they have a problem which you can't handle, who would you refer them to?
OK so maybe the local social services department would be there, and the local education authority, but who else? Samaritans? Rape Crisis Centre? Race Equality Council? Citizens Advice Bureau?
Why don't you go to the local CAB and take one of each of the leaflets they will have in their reception, and make a list of each of the names and contacts in there?
Hope this helps.
