RE: More mind boggling questions... ITEC Holistic Massage

Hi Eagle,

Yes I agree with much of Claudette's reasoning.

With the contraindications you really have to learn ITEC's subdivisions of contraindications (either through their syllabus or through the Tucker books) and what they put under total, medical and local contraindications. Fever is total, diabetes and heart conditions are medical, which leaves the broken leg. However I have never come across the 'temporary' category before. Did your tutor get the paper from ITEC or make up the questions themself? Because one could presumably treat the broken leg as a local contraindication (you couldn't massage over a plaster cast anyway) and massage the rest of the body if it was comfortable for the client to lie on a couch. HOWEVER, it's probably best to stick by the letter of the ITEC syllabus and not engage in too much lateral thinking.

The second question is very oddly worded. I wonder if it should be which is NOT a contraindication... Only because whiplash is not specifically mentioned by Louise Tucker. You would of course be very cautious about treating someone with whiplash and would more than likely have to get medical approval. But in some cases massage can be of benefit to a client suffering from whiplash - the ongoing effects can last for years. I put some bumph on whiplash into the appendices of my case studies and found some useful information on www.myobody.com.

As a group my class often commented that life is difficult enough learning all the massage and A&P theory without having to double-guess what ITEC are getting at. And as for the double-negative questions... well just don't get me started!! [:@] When it's just revision then I guess it's quite useful because it really does make you think, and research, and look things up - but when it's in the exam it's just not funny!

Hi Aldebaran

Thanks for your reply. I'll check out that website. Yeah, whiplash was only mentioned in class as a total contraindication - I haven't seen anything in LT or ITEC syllabus (that I recall!) about whiplash.

And I think these are ITEC questions, rather than my tutors.

Ok, back to the revision!

Eagle
