I’m just going through a mock Holistic Massage (ITEC) paper that was set by my college and wonder if anyone can shed light as to how to get to the ‘correct’ answer on the following questions:
1. Temporary contraindications to holistic massage include:
a) heart conditions
b) diabetes
c) broken leg
d) fever
Answer: c
I put d) and got it wrong, and I’m not sure how to work out how to choose between c) and d), which are both ‘temporary’ conditions. Anyone got any clues?
2. Contraindications to holistic massage include:
a) whiplash
b) sunburn
c) bruising
d) dermatitis

Again any of these answer could be correct – any idea why the correct answer is a)?

This would be my logic..................
For the first question, a heart condition or diabetes are both GP referral, so they're out, & fever is a total contraindication, which leaves the broken leg, which on this occision ITEC choose to refer to as 'temporary', & I think that's why the answer is C.
For the second question, sunburn, bruising and dermatitis - assuming they are restricted to one part of the body - are all local contraindications so you could feasibly go ahead with the treatment avoiding the area, whereas whiplash being an injury would require GP referral and would be contraindicated to treatment.
As you say, it is pretty typical ITEC, but that would be my best guess as to how they've worked it out.

Thanks for your reply. To get the answer for these questions, it's almost like spotting the odd one out and ignoring the actual wording of the question because 'temporary contraindication' and 'contraindication' don't seem to be giving all the information in order to provide the exact answer that ITEC are looking for.
